IBM Cloud
What are some of the most dramatic examples you’ve witnessed of the cloud helping to transform a business?
Brendan Wright
for startups it's let us scale to enterprise grade "overnight" - I think how that whole VC backed industry has changed in 10 years is a huge example
Amy Hylden Anderson
I think it's dramatic when it changes a whole industry. Again, AWS and Zillow come to mind right away.
Crowd Captain
this crowd chat app right here is an example; runs in cloud (#devops) lots of node etc; low cost high value; don't have to hire bunch of sys admins #infrastructure #code
IO
First thing that comes to mind is Disaster recovery scenarios or collocation IT demands that weren't predicted!
John Furrier
I see analytics continuing to be huge spinning up cloud real time resource pools to do "point analytics" on data..system like capabilities at the finger tips #bluemix will be part of this
Brian Fanzo
At #AWSreinvent it was very cool to see companies like @AirBnB & @Dropcam grow and expand so fast while never purchasing one physical server!
GGG
@CrowdCaptain that is true, people are exposed to apps that they never know runs on the cloud
Brendan Wright
in big companies that have already invested, the transformation tends to be looked at for cost savings and frankly that case is often hard to make
Brendan Wright
big companies that have already invested in systems need to focus on cloud projects where they develop new capabilities - analytics and other big data are use cases that make sense
IO
Enterprises must find a scalable approach to grow & manage cloud applications while also using software to manage legacy equipment.
John Furrier
@iSocial_Fanz there is a lock in if to dependent on cloud;
Ed Laczynski
the dramatic ones aren't all greenfield. they are often in seemingly fringe problems with outsized impact. e.g. can't access information, get cloud+mobile storage and sharing >> increase productivity + sales + happiness
Brendan Wright
Lock in is a misnomer - there are plenty of SIs that will move you cloud to cloud
Brendan Wright
it just a function of business case if you worried about cost... if you are missing capabilities, then that's a different challenge, but possibly an opty too @edla
Gurvinder Ahluwalia
I am impressed by crowd-sourced collaboration (like Waze for navigaiton). The pattern of peer-to-peer capability in #IoT rather #IoTH (H for Human) enabled by cloud presents astounding possibilities to society and business.
Renat Khasanshyn
we've seen a dramatic impact of the cloud in the form of cloud foundry powered app factory which resulted in 1-2 year time to market advantage for 1B+ enterprise (media) against competition
MyCloudCure.com
The reason we exist is because of the cloud! Forever changing the Home & Business IT experience. We're the most Simple, Reliable & Affordable Online Helpdesk. We built MCC IN the cloud & deliver our services FROM the cloud. www.MyCloudCure.com
IBM Cloud
Do you view cloud transformation as a one-time event or an ongoing process? Why?
John Furrier
great point; no brainer- it's a continuum - ongoing for many many years for sure
Amy Hylden Anderson
We're at the very beginning of a fundamental technology shift. This is definitely an ongoing process.
CrowdFather
this is a multi decade innovation cycle with #cloud #bigdata #mobile #social
IBM Cloud
So, the consensus seems to be that it's an ongoing process. What's the catalyst that sets the process in motion?
Amy Hermes
@aha_inthe_cloud what should the ecosystem collaboration look like as we embark on this transformation journey?
Brian Fanzo
With legacy apps, hardware and processes it is a ongoing process for the considerable future!
Brian Fanzo
Catalyst is wanting to be able to expand and manage change & growing IT needs in a scalable way!
John Furrier
@iSocial_Fanz we got Brian in the house..
Brian Fanzo
@furrier Yes sir happy to jump in when I saw it come across my twitter feed! Cheers! #IBMCloud Chat!
Brendan Wright
transformation is an ongoing process, cloud is the technology of the day that is new to the enterprise, but many software startups are cloudy from day1
Amy Hylden Anderson
The catalyst is different for different businesses. I just spent 3 days with companies that are fiercely proud of the systems they built 30 years ago. These guys are moving to the cloud when their key IT people retire.
IBM Cloud
Welcome, Brian!
Brian Fanzo
Yes @aha_inthe_cloud I am still amazed at how many are scared of change! #CloudChat
Amy Hylden Anderson
There are also a LOT of businesses outside of the US that are born on the cloud because they can't access the IT resources any other way.
Amy Hermes
@iSocial_Fanz Can you think of anything that would make it less scary?
Brian Fanzo
@amyhermes Yes a migration path to the cloud for non-cloud enabled applications as well as plans and strategies that phase out legacy systems but to do so it requires leadership buy in to fully invest in moving to the cloud
Brendan Wright
that fear isn't new - in the MadMen last Sunday you could see it in the reaction to the firm getting a (IBM) mainframe computer
Kelly Meade
I'm behind but ongoing process. Will only continue to evolve & transform as apps are built for the cloud & SaaS becomes the norm. The catalyst depends on cust but I'd say innovation & speed to market. Need to keep up with competitors and customers.
Gurvinder Ahluwalia
There is no cloud transformation, change, or strategy until a culture is prepared to absorb it. "Culture eats Strategy for Breakfast" (Drucker)
John Furrier
Culture eats strategy nice quote @guriahluwalia
Brian Fanzo
@guriahluwalia Agree but the only thing companies are scared about more than moving to the cloud is changing company culture!
John Furrier
@bcwright1217 that mad men was a great one. I was totally thinking the same thing when that scene was there. now cognitive computing cc @ibmwatson
Brendan Wright
culture ate strategy + you are what you eat => culture == strategy
Ed Laczynski
Ongoing - its business transformation. The seeds are planted with email, or a web app, or a CRM system, and it grows into a pervasive force for change @IBMcloud
Amy Hermes
@guriahluwalia care to offer any best practices for successful culture shifts -- cloud or otherwise...?
kirsten graham
@iSocial_Fanz This was fun, from the Mad Men blog: http://blogs.amctv.com/mad-men/2014/05/mad-mens-1960s-handbook-the-ibm-system360-computer/ #mainframe
Mad Men’s 1960s Handbook – The IBM System/360 Computer
This week’s 1960s Handbook takes a closer look at the IBM System/360-30 mainframe computer installed at Sterling Cooper & Partners in Season 7, Episode 4, The Monolith.
IBM Cloud
Q1: First question: How do you define cloud transformation?
Brendan Wright
I don't focus on cloud transformation - the focus is on business transformation and how cloud can enable it
Eric Saint-Marc
A1: Cloud transformation at its core is an extension of IT and the Business.
Eric Saint-Marc
A1: Cloud also provides a conduit to enable limitless opportunities for companies of all size greater access to the shared economy
Brendan Wright
A1: Cloud helps businesses become more agile, which is more critical today as innovation is accelerating.
Amy Hylden Anderson
Cloud is transforming all industries, so it's really fundamental to how all businesses manage their core competencies.
John Furrier
this is about infra/sw changes that extend the on premise datacenter to cloud for economic benefits enabling new kinds of workloads #imho
John Furrier
@bcwright1217 Agree outcomes are the driver and bus line mgrs are now part of the process they are input for the desired outcomes
Jeff Kelly
at its heart cloud allows enterprises to focus more on running the business and less on running the technology - it enables flexibility, adaptability and speed.
Amy Hylden Anderson
Every business becomes a tech business; eg, Amazon in retail, Zillow in real estate. And cloud is at the heart of these transformations.
John Furrier
Other transformation is top line driven not just cost savings; new workloads/apps/experiences offer new revenue opportunities for customers
GGG
We see multinational companies using it, question is, most "cloud" storage is based mainly in the US, are there companies moving their storage else where as reference to Russia/Ukraine issue?
Brendan Wright
@furrier basically no one will transform to the cloud just to do that.... the reality is the transformation is of the business to deliver better, more effective outcomes.
John Furrier
@bcwright1217 I'm not saying just for top line but bc cloud offers new economics and speed to value (agility) but outcomes will drive it for sure existing and possibly new ones
Renat Khasanshyn
cloud transformation is a process to achieve order of magnitude improvements to a) time to market b) TCO. Customers of @altoros aim for “net new” revenue using #cloudfoundry app factories
