Hi, thanks for the Q&A session. Question: In your experience, what technologies are critical to enable transformation?
KK
The technologies critical to enable transformation include x86 architecture, virtualization, digitization and automation technologies, service catalog and PaaS.
Jon Peirce
There are some key technologies involved. At the infrastructure layer, there are the core technologies enabling efficient scalable infrastructure - CI, hypervisor, virtualized storage and nework, then there are the automation/orchestration
Jon Peirce
tools that enable self-service as well as the technologies that enable financial transparency and consumption based showback/chargeback
Sudeep Shrivastava
#EMCITtransformation ..., @JonPeirce , @KK_doc CIOs find it difficult keep the enthusiasm up in the organization towards IT Transformation... what are some best practices to increase enthusiasm and participation ?
John Furrier
. @subahe enthusiasm isn't rip and replace #EMCworld
KK
Some techniques we have deployed include cross-skilling through on the job training; courseware; values champions to identify and propagate transformation values; employee roundtables; innovation portal etc. But paint the vision well
Jon Peirce
Engaging employees and clients in the journey is key
Jon Peirce
Frequent and repetitive communication, while a bit painful, is key. We have found that people begin to understand at their own pace and there is no substitute for repeated messaging
Sudeep Shrivastava
Thanks Jon, KK So overall IT has to do more of communications internally...
Jon Peirce
Yes - transformation requires a new mentality and culture in IT and that can't change overnight, but requires a very comprehensive attack plan
Steven Carr
How about we all take a minute to meet our experts, @JonPeirce and @KK_doc
Steven Carr
@JonPeirce has led EMC IT's transformation to become a contemporary, elastic, on-demand IT-as-a-Service provider and strategic business partner through technology, operating model, process and organizational innovation and evolution. Ask him anything!
Steven Carr
@kk_doc leads the IT Office of Architecture and Innovation and is responsible for overall IT architecture and strategy. Additional responsibilities: enterprise architecture, new technologies & solutions, 3rd platform roadmaps, service portfolio management.
KK
Thanks for the intro. Hello everyone
Jon Peirce
Hi - please feel free to ask us anything that's on your mind
Steven Carr
Thanks guys for extending #EMCWorld to the rest of the world!
John Furrier
How should customer evaluate cost of ownership in new product/architectures? Are there new variables #EMCWorld
Jon Peirce
We like to think of "cost to serve" as the key metric.
Jon Peirce
This involves all direct and indirect costs, divided by UOM with a realistic assumption of utilization rate
KK
with the newer models, there is more focus on pay per use rather than an alloctated model
Karen Webb
Welcome EMC IT. When you say IT Transformation, what do you mean? IT as a Service?
KK
IT Transformation includes infrastructure, operating model and application transformation - IT as a service is a major part of the op model transformation
Steven Carr
Welcome to EMC IT’s first CrowdChat of the EMC World series! Please take a moment to watch EMC IT’s animated transformation video if you have not already: http://bit.ly/1ESpST...
Steven Carr
During this CrowdChat event, our experts will answer your questions regarding EMC IT’s journey to IT as a Service (ITaaS) and how IT has evolved its structure, culture, and role within the organization to better align with the needs of the business.
Steven Carr
EMC’s IT Transformation has touched every aspect of IT from architecture, infrastructure, application development, and funding.
Sudeep Shrivastava
Each Transformation should have a vision in terms of tangible benefits that users can recognize, for example our first transformation gave a self-service portal to users... What else could be big such things like that mobile apps, user experience, UC ?
Jon Peirce
One of the biggest benefits that IT transformation should deliver is a more agile, elastic IT that enables its clients to achieve their biz objectives faster and more successfully
Jon Peirce
Ultimately, it comes down to relevance/impact for IT and speed/success for the Biz
Karen Webb
How important is it to have an order able catalog/portal? #emcittransformation #emcworld
Jon Peirce
It's critical!
Jon Peirce
Empowering customers with the ability to be self-sufficient is very important
KK
How can IT appear as invisible as possible for standard services ? Automation is key to deliver that business agility
Sudeep Shrivastava
Is it an opportunity if we can offer services on portal and give provision for user to compare prices with public cloud service providers (aws, azure....)
KK
We need to appear as a competitive provider all the time - price is one element but other factors such as quality of service etc which may be important. So making sure the service levels are transparent along with the price is important
Sudeep Shrivastava
so Business gets a sigh of relief! with mutually agreed SLAs
KK
Yes it is important that the customer (business) understand what they are getting, not only that it is the 'cheapest'
Jon Peirce
We call this "the happy path". It's in everyone's best interest to stay on the happy path!
Roberto Araujo ☮
What role does social (internal and external) play within the organization that's going through an IT transformation (3rd Platform) #EMCWORLD
KK
Social media is extremely important in keeping the two-way communicaion up. We have leveraged our own internal Inside EMC social platform to good measure. For external customer-bound communication, we leverage the EMC IT Proven site
KK
the 3rd platform transformation can drink its own champagne through a frictionaless social model
Steven Carr
@KK_doc What bit of content has been your favorite to watch and show your customers?
Jon Peirce
While I hate doing videos, I find that videos, or narrated presentations elicit a better response than text or whitepapers do
KK
@_StevenCarr Several favorites in terms of content even - EMC IT's Journey to the cloud and leading onto Converged Infrastructure, Flash and automated/orchestrated elastic hybrid cloud, our Journey to Big Data and onto the Business Data Lake
KK
Videos rock :)
Roberto Araujo ☮
@KK_doc @JonPeirce I find that video is a great way to consume content that is otherwise complex and that needs a SME to demo it. I also enjoy forums!
Karen Webb
Were there any roadblocks or speed bumps or mistakes you made along the way - or was this a smooth, seamless transition?
Jon Peirce
Too many to list...however
Jon Peirce
None have been fatal!
Jon Peirce
One big mistake was not involving the clients of services enough in the design and construction of the services
Jon Peirce
Another was to first approach automation and orchestration with a "scripting" mentality instead of an app dev mentality
Jon Peirce
We created too much complexity with scripting and had to clean it up later
Jon Peirce
We also ran into a lot of data quality issues that impacted our ability to meter and charge back consumption
KK
We also treated all our internal customers as one - but our epiphany later was 3 - the enterprise wanting integrity and availability, the lines of business wanting agility and choice, and the employees wanting productivity and collaboration
