What about iot applications for the elderly?
Venetia Muench
perhaps a connected home sensing if a normal activity does not happen?
Susan Confort
great idea so if they aren't up and eating at the right time then take an action
Saurabh Bhide
a wheelchair that can monitor vital statistics of person who is using it?
cristene j g-w
entirely right. Imagine the apps - and smarter clothing, notifications, meds
Susan Confort
great what about monitoring taking mess?
Roopa Maniktala
smarter footwear to prevent injuries and falls
IBM_Electronics
@VenetiaMS would make a big difference for families
cristene j g-w
mess? Are you referring to my kitchen?
Susan Confort
Haha my typing is at its usual high standard
Richard Douglass
and driverless vehicles
Ron Baker
There are already in-home detectors that sense normal motion patterns and alert people when they change (possibly indicating a fall or illness).
Ron Baker
I believe its a service that you can sign up for.
Richard Douglass
it's not just real time alerting, though, it's also about identifying patterns of behavior that could lead to improved services to the elderly
Neil Postlethwaite
some great use cases already in places like Bolzano, Italy https://www.youtube....
Neil Postlethwaite
I think the main thing as well is how this can be done in a very non-invasive fashion. No cameras, all done by monitoring services like water/electricity and patterns

How do you all see the Internet of Things shaping Smarter Cities? #SmartCities #IBMIoT #CES2015
S Scott Burnett
to enable smarter cities we have to look from the user perspective back to the cloud. It's not about the Thing is about the Service #IBMIOT
Ron Baker
Infusion of data that can enable much better use of City resources...and communication back to those citizens.
Ron Baker
Smart Meters are an easy example of that...you and the water utility can be quickly notified of potential leaks through analytics...saving water and money immediately.
Richard Douglass
one example for very large cities would be traffic mgt
Ron Baker
But in the bigger picture, these meters also help show standard sets of patterns, that can help identify conservation techniques and demand optimization at a systemic level.
Phil Fritz
data from IOT can also be converged with data from legacy applications to drive new insights, particularly with geospatial analytics
Ron Baker
Yes, traffic management is a good example of different types of sensors: traffic motion sensors, camera analysis, mobile phone apps GPS, and actual city vehicle GPS locations. These all get combined for analytics...ala Google Maps & Waze.
Ron Baker
Phil is spot on. Geospatial is a form of data integration. Instead of hard links or "foreign keys", you can assume a relationship due to time and location proximity.
Ron Baker
Which lets you combine completely separate data in interesting ways.
Ryan Begley
Will the iot become the dominant sales and marketing channel in the near future?
Venetia Muench
and how dramatically will it change personalization of messaging?
Neil Postlethwaite
there is a huge amount of buzz around IoT from a sales & marketing perspective. Our focus will always be on the business value of the projects and I'm sure Cloud, Analytics and Big Data along with Social will remain at the fore
IBM_Electronics
Q2: What keeps businesses from adopting #IoT? #CES2015
Suresh Subbanarahari
Hyper connectivity opens new Business channels
Veena Pureswaran
Enterprise privacy concerns
Rami Ahola
Just because you can connect stuff doesn't mean it's good business. I think the biggest roadblock is lack of profitable business models.
S Scott Burnett
Interoperability, Standards, Security are all Challenges to face. The availability of an API Economy #IBMIOT
Martin Kienzle
we need to clear the "standards jungle"
S Scott Burnett
It is indeed about the SECURE IOT #IBM IOT
Richard Douglass
a more fundamental issue is defining IOT ecosystems that customers actually care about
cristene j g-w
@rmdouglass remarkably enough, IoT also needs biz models that companies care about
Richard Douglass
work in from consumer needs, not outward from perspective of device manufacturers
Neil Postlethwaite
How many of you out there have tried our IoT Foundation #IBMIoT #Bluemix ? Signup for a free trial, get your devices connected to the cloud in minutes http://bit.ly/1xLCB8... #CESIoTChat

Piece of cake! I connected my first device in less than 30 minutes! Recipes provide step-by step instructions and code snippets. https://developer.ib...
Neil Postlethwaite
@gtkwahoo I would expect no less from you ... #likeaboss #IBMIoT
S Scott Burnett
To connect everything there must be a composable Service infrastructure in the cloud we call it BlueMix #BlueMix
Susan Confort
hey for the laywoman, what is a composable service?
S Scott Burnett
@susanconfort Think about Facebook for people. Friending and Sharing. IOT devices will do same and the services are unlimited and must be "composable" #IBMIOT
Neil Postlethwaite
@susanconfort and taking it to the next level, think about the ability to compose services like data streams from your IoT devices with analytics or mobile devices to react quickly to events, all with minimum coding
Susan Confort
What about iot applications in retail?
Susan Confort
How about inventory that can count itself?
Veena Pureswaran
Haulage and transportation can be significantly optimized
Ryan Begley
the notion of inventory is likely to become significantly different in an iot future
Susan Confort
Ryan what do you mean that the notion of inventory will be different
IBMVentureGroup
Lots of these already emerging, see iBeacons for example
Neil Postlethwaite
also things like people management in shopping malls, pushing offers based on location, it's exciting times for #IBMIoT in Retail
Gabriel Vizzard
What about all these different standards for wireless IoT
IBM_Electronics
@SScottB and Ted - what do you think?
Greg Knowles
Wireless protocols have different applications -- in the home (short range & peer to peer), in the city (longer range), across geographies. But within some of those domains there are dozens of variations, and we need some consolidation...
Gabriel Vizzard
@gtkwahoo Indeed, there will likely by polywireless standard gateways.
S Scott Burnett
It's not about one winner but the accommodation of multiple protocols that can interoperate. We address this with out IoT approach
