Chat led by our analytics experts around predictive analytics
Berni Simmons
Ha! @garfage I think there are examples of sporting teams using #predicitiveanalytics to minimise injury problems and analyse performance data
Gary Flood
Tell Roy Hodgson!
Berni Simmons
LOL. Not sure this technology can pull off miracles @garfage
Chris Brown
British Lions, any major professional rugby team!
Ben Stonehouse
The England Rugby team have RFID chips in their shirts and Health Monitors . I guess Football will soon follow
Pierre DeBois
@bernisimmonsIt's early. The teams that link health data from smart devices to analytics will be ahead of the curve.
Robert Douglas
if you like rugby this is an fun way to get deeper into the data - www.rfu.com/rbssixna...
Chris Brown
we must discuss next time we catch up Rob, a great opportunity for sports analytics with 2015 world cup
Ben Stonehouse
There's a great book of the use of Stats in football. Also proves why england loose http://www.theguardi...
Why England Lose by Simon Kuper and Stefan Szymanski | Book review
Two authors bravely attempt to explain England's footballing failure and, like the team, ultimately lose says David Runciman
Gary Flood
That would be too depressing to read...! Tell me #data could change it?
Gary Flood
So so far we've talkd about #education, #retail, even #sport with #data and #analytics. But Jeremy Hunt is interested in #data for the #NHS, surely? Is there a play there too?
Rachel Clinton
absolutely - in Scotland they have had single patient records since records began and they use analytics extremely effectively to understand treatment successes across a full life
Chris Brown
Absolutely but before you start remember this is the NHS and there significant issues to overcome so maybe a good chat would be to assume the data is there problem is getting at
Dominic Lloyd
Work with anonymised data sets for research.
Chris Brown
Unfortunately Scotland isn't representative of the NHS Rachel
Dominic Lloyd
Public data projects big in US. "Hackathons"
Rachel Clinton
in England there's lots of use in research and recently in predicting A&E admissions in order to schedule other non urgent resources (it's very weather dependent)
Chris Brown
@domlloyd You would think Dominic but even that is a challenge
Dominic Lloyd
Agree that patient privacy is critical in all this.
Dominic Lloyd
Most NHS trusts and Universities setting up some kind of research function as I understand. Anybody else care to offer insight about that?
Gary Flood
Maybe smart use of #data could be the way to get some good solid #manufacturing base back to the UK?
Chris Brown
Now that is a great idea, bring our manufacturing into the 21st century using tools like predictive analytics and embracing the IoT
Berni Simmons
@CHB_UK yes. prediction & IoT confluence
Chris Brown
Let me the first to bring up the IBM IoT Lab in Hursley, the first of its kind in the UK where you can see the IoT in action
Gary Flood
Yes I would vote for a party in May that said that.
Berni Simmons
spoke to a really interesting infrastructure provider this week heaps of #telematics #data operational and customer applications
Chris Brown
Dont think I've ever heard a political party talk about technology at a useful level, would love to hear that conversation instead we are giving £x million to develop something
Gary Flood
So people are starting to move into real action here?
Chris Brown
Definitely, again its taking time but UK manufacturing companies are now seriously looking at this stuff
Gary Flood
I've heard suggestions #predictiveanalytics could also help kids at school. How might #education benefit from unlocking #data?
Pierre DeBois
It may help in guidance regarding missing school days, not checking in, but it needs to be set up in a way that permits response. Right now schools are having a challenge managing budgets, retaining staff and equipment.
Dominic Lloyd
Maybe profiling large sets of student returns data and tests in order to increase effectiveness of teaching?
Chris Brown
This is particularly important at universities around student retention
Dominic Lloyd
Especially in this day and age where student outlay is 000s of pounds! Reduce risk of picking wrong course.
Ben Stonehouse
Its at it most powerful if combine with other data such as social services to uncover wider patterns
Robert Douglas
There was a very good case study from Medway Youth Trust and using analytics to intervene with NEETS - http://www.computing...
Gary Flood
So what about our first vote here, guys: which should we be concentrating on #operational or #customer side of the equation when it comes to working with #data?
Dominic Lloyd
Depends on the industry and the use case. Customer side probably seen as the biggest value driver
Berni Simmons
. @garfage It can be both. When organisations develop #datascience capability they can tackle both and boost ROI
Chris Brown
I agree one shouldn't take precedence over the other
Robert Douglas
#unlockyourdata - predictive analytics cuts across many industries http://www.via-cc.at...

Gary Flood
That's a great graphic, thanks Rob!
Gary Flood
We only have a few minutes rest to discuss #data and #analytics with IBM this afternoon! Wahat do people really want to ask, don't hold back!
Chris Brown
how do we make analytics more pervasive in UK industry
Gary Flood
Good. You first, @CHB_UK - share some ideas?
Ben Stonehouse
Ii would be interested to learn people views on Descriptive Vs. Predictive Vs. Prescriptive. Its a hot topic with my clients at the moment
Gary Flood
And are we being a bit vague about what *sort* of #data? Surely there's #structured and #unstructured, right? Is #data one size fits all now?
Berni Simmons
Yes. #textmining is a growing area. There is real value in there. Especially turning unstructured to structured
Rachel Clinton
@bernisimmons lots of value in unstructured data http://bit.ly/1Cgfaa...
Videos - Smart Vision - Europe
In this section of the site we have some 'how to' videos demonstrating elements of IBM SPSS functionality.  How to build a predictive model using IBM SPSS Modeler Affinity analysis made easy How to perform text analytics using IBM SPSS Modeler Premiu...
Dominic Lloyd
unstructured has always been difficult. Maybe its easier now
Chris Brown
data is data while its not all one size all data has significant common elements and is treated in similar ways
Ben Stonehouse
There use to be a real divide. You analyised the numbers and read the words. Locking away 80%. Now it's just as easy to unlocked patterns in unstructured as structured. User can unlock patterns from all their data
Gary Flood
Fascinating. Is the divide becoming redundant?
Gary Flood
Let's shift the ground here a bit. Tell me, as experts, what is happening with #data add #analytics right now today with #retail, please panel?
Rachel Clinton
lots of work on customer churn at the moment, perhaps a sign of the economic times
Rachel Clinton
@bernisimmons wrote a really good blog recently on this, analytics is key to survival! www.sv-europe.com/ca...
How can predictive analytics help retailers weather the economic storm? - Smart Vision - Europe
Predictive analytics can help retailers consolidate the customer they already have as well as acquire new ones and make their marketing budgets work harder.
Dominic Lloyd
Challenge is being able to take data on customer from many sources, target as appropriate and measure effectiveness of offer - quickly
Rachel Clinton
Classically retailers focused on acquisition, cross sell and retention. Our customers are asking a lot about cross sell, basket analysis and preventing #churn
Rachel Clinton
Many retailers historically didn't know their customer of course. Catalogue companies are the best in the world at this - online retails and the high street are still playing catch up
