Before we get into the discussion, I'd like to double check the understanding of the terminology - what cloud computing is.

Stefan Ried
A bit beyond to the NIST definitions, Forrester considers an pay-per-use, OPEX oriented resource model as cloud computing.

Stefan Ried
For sure there are the classical resource types, Infrastructure/IaaS, Platforms/PaaS, and Software Applications/SaaS

Stefan Ried
They replace traditional hardware, integrated platforms compontents, or business processes.

Stefan Ried
But it's important to embrace the comsumption based or user subscription based model.

Dez Blanchfield
- we all know what the NIST definitions are, but there's still a view IMHO that it's on one hand "outsourcing" and on the other hand a complete transformation of process & implementation / deployment, esp. DevOps et al.
Jean Paul Sigwalt
thanks that's clear, but how does hybrid then fit into the definition?

Dez Blanchfield
- I'm strongly of the view that we're still 5 years away from a realistic "utility" model, companies with 2 to 3 years of life in on-prem leased or capex write downs are not shifting before they have to..

From practice I see is important to ask about general perception about cloud, before any other discussion or presentation

Stefan Ried
yes, coming to this in a minute

Stefan Ried
If you have virtualized on-prem data center, but still charge the business in a CAPEX model, its not a cloud at all.
Radu Crahmaliuc, 2401+, ☁, PhD, MSc.
The most clear example I'm using explaining the utility means of the Cloud is TV-Cable service

Dez Blanchfield
- surely one of the greatest impacts is Shadow IT and the shift from CIO's to CMO / CFO roles making what were IT decisions by focusing on "services" across the board?

Stefan Ried
@dez_blanchfield yes, 2nd dimension is the privacy level with variations: Private-on-prem, private at provider, virtual private, public highly shared

Dez Blanchfield
- on the whole GOVT. isn't ready to deal with a Utility "pay as you go" model as they are all too oft locked into "fixed price" contract models.. which don't suit Cloud of course.

Dez Blanchfield
- PayTV aka Cable TV ( in USA speak ) is a perfect example.. Water, Power, "subscription" services etc..

David Holliday
@dez_blanchfield Yes, I agree Shadow IT is driving the pace of change. Often way ahead of IT decisions on cloud

Bo Soevsoe Nielsen
Public, Hybrid, Private, Off Prem. No one is better than the other. Each type of cloud serves a business purpose and has a reason to 'live'.

Dez Blanchfield
- privacy / security et al shouldn't actually change per se regardless of "where" you deploy, you gain more flexibility but on-prem / colo / data centre / "cloud" - the business risks remain the same.

David Holliday
@dez_blanchfield Governments in CEE have got cloud on the agenda, but more often as a Internal cloud provider in my experience

Ewa Zborowska
@DavidmHolliday but they often lack administrative tools to run internal clouds and need to deal with that
Radu Crahmaliuc, 2401+, ☁, PhD, MSc.
@DavidmHolliday Between Agenda and Reality it is a Long running distance@

Dez Blanchfield
- cloud in Government is a tough one, but if you look at the New South Wales ( NSW ) state here in Australia we're smashing it out of the ball park with OpenData, Apps4Gov, and Cloud First.. look into it ( email me for more info )..

I prefer govt focus on: What services should we offer: How can we support Innovation and growth? Effective services? Open govt?
