Let's go for Q4: Will this new open technology "war" drive a new round of consolidation in networking? Seems like the mid-market players will find it tough sledding
Kord Campbell
it's not a war, it's a revolution.
Rayno
It does seem to be increasingly software driven. Which means if you are a hardware vendor you've got some thinking to do
Craig Matsumoto
Yeah, dunno what happens to the mid-market guys who don't make it. Would anyone bigger want to buy them?
Rayno
It looks something like this http://finance.yahoo...
Kord Campbell
moreover, i'd add that the decentralization coming to the industry is unsettling to traditional models. clouds run by everyone everywhere == loss of control to a few
Rayno
@kordless yes but isn't this an ancient IT debate? Centralization vs. distributed. PCs. vs. mainframes
Kord Campbell
it is certainly a cyclic phenomenon. however, until now, it wasn't possible to have a globally federated cloud. cryptocurrencies give us that possibility today, which changes everything.
Kord Campbell
obviously I'm biased. :)
Rayno
When will #government and #democracy be like this?
Craig Matsumoto
@kordless Related effect in the opposite direction: What if Amazon, Azure, etc. become the major lifeblood of the equipment vendors? Lots of power in the hands of just a few.
Kord Campbell
as soon as someone writes an open source app for X thing the government does (and much better, I'd add) and then does a decentralized raise on it.
Rayno
@DiegoWoitasen #SDN and #opensource technology war or revolution?
Kord Campbell
@craigmatsumoto amazon has always prioritized shareholder value. if a deal with a vendor doesn't also, they'll do it themselves. Aren't they making their own servers now?
Rayno
Yes, which makes me wonder, why don't more people do that?
Kord Campbell
capital and opportunity cost.
Rayno
I like the idea of distributed government apps like registrations and #DMV
Craig Matsumoto
@kordless Exactly. World moving to the cloud might = bad news for equipment vendors. Lots of buying power in the hands of a few very demanding customers.
Kord Campbell
there's suppose to be a decentralized lyft/uber offering coming out as well on a coin/token raise. peer to peer rides + trust, because rides are peer to peer and need trust.
Kord Campbell
@craigmatsumoto think USB cigarette lighter adapters. name the brand that owns that market.
Rayno
@kordless what uber has done to a aging taxi model could be done in many markets
Rayno
@kordless yes #USB market is very Radio Shack generic
Rayno
Q1: Let's start with some questions about #VMworld. First one. Have @cisco and @vmware entered a "cold war" ??!!
Stuart Miniman
one of the top quotes I had at #vmworld was a Service Provider who said he wouldn't touch SDN until VMware and Cisco stopped fighting since he uses both suppliers
John Furrier
Martin Casado said the market is moving fast and the "damn broke" six months ago
Craig Matsumoto
Stu- that's pretty funny. He might have to wait a long time.
Rayno
Good point Stu
Rayno
Vendor wars = bad for the customer? The whole point is they want an interoperable solution
Rayno
@stu did you name the customer? #sdn
John Furrier
@craigmatsumoto here is Martin's commentary - self provisioning was his theme http://siliconangle....
VMware exec sees ‘Utopian’ future of self-provisioning data center | #vmworld | SiliconANGLE
Developers have long dreamed of a world in which applications define their own infrastructure needs. But VMware, Inc. CTO and networking general manager Martin Casado takes a contrarian view.

What happes to VCE? http://www.vce.com/
Converged Infrastructure | Cloud Computing Solutions | VCE
VCE allows your organization to reach the cloud faster, with the world's first converged infrastructure solution for private cloud computing.
Craig Matsumoto
@dnoguer VCE - I really don't know what happens there. How much do the partners continue caring about converged infrastructure?
Steve Noble
@stu @cisco and @vmware will always have to work together, the petty "don't display your sign" crap is not the technical folks.

Q3: Highlights of #vmwworld? Was it the EVO:RAIL series, #openstack, #docker? @vmware loves all technology, I guess.
Craig Matsumoto
EVO was really interesting. VMware getting into networking without really getting into networking.
Craig Matsumoto
It's almost passive-aggressive. Damn it, why didn't I think of that when I was writing headlines last week? :)
Stuart Miniman
@craigmatsumoto hmmm, EVO:RAIL is just compute/storage (no networking) and even RACK just adds NSX. VMware won't get into hw, but that's ok, right? They are leaders of the software revolution in networking.
Craig Matsumoto
Docker was very interesting too. Esoteric but cool, especially if containers can replace VMs eventually
Craig Matsumoto
@stu Yeah, I guess it's a leap of logic. VMW won't sell hardware but they'll come really really close
Rayno
Yes, prior to 2014 I thought #docker just meant bad fashion
Craig Matsumoto
Ex-VMware-er Howie Xu has an interesting take on containers vs. VMs: http://vnetworking.b...
Rayno
funny, I was reading that this AM. It may end up like a Microsoft vs. Java discussion, technologies can coexist
Craig Matsumoto
Probably, but what fun is that? :)
Craig Matsumoto
VMware's embrace of Docker might be another defensive move, although less so than OpenStack - they seem sincere about advancing the container cause
Craig Matsumoto
Interesting sessions at VMworld, too - they're just starting out with some Docker things & want input on where to take them
Stuart Miniman
@craigmatsumoto it's very early with Docker, but hugely interesting and important. Kudos for VMware embracing - everyone is sorting out how this could help/hurt existing solutions
Craig Matsumoto
@stu I agree. VMware could've just launched massive anti-container PR - instead they're feeling out the possibilities.
Rayno
Q2: There are many of you lurking out there -- let's hear from you. Please speak up! Who is winning the cold war so far @vmware or @cisco ? #sdn #vitualization
John Furrier
very tough question Cisco has more leverage in market presence and if @vmware can change the game then Cisco might be off balance
Rayno
15 round battle coming up
Rayno
There seems to be a general malaise around many of these partnerships these days
Rayno
Not just @cisco and @vmware -- but the others too such as @junipernetworks @BRCDcomm and @F5networks, among others
Rayno
It shows the real challenge: How do you embrace #open technologies without cannibalizing your own products?
Stuart Miniman
The whole "open" discussion is nuanced. Cisco has been building a good story - see my interview with Howie Xu https://www.youtube.... - VMware has work to do to gain open source credibility.
