it is certainly a cyclic phenomenon. however, until now, it wasn't possible to have a globally federated cloud. cryptocurrencies give us that possibility today, which changes everything.

@kordless Related effect in the opposite direction: What if Amazon, Azure, etc. become the major lifeblood of the equipment vendors? Lots of power in the hands of just a few.

as soon as someone writes an open source app for X thing the government does (and much better, I'd add) and then does a decentralized raise on it.

@kordless Exactly. World moving to the cloud might = bad news for equipment vendors. Lots of buying power in the hands of a few very demanding customers.

there's suppose to be a decentralized lyft/uber offering coming out as well on a coin/token raise. peer to peer rides + trust, because rides are peer to peer and need trust.

EVO was really interesting. VMware getting into networking without really getting into networking.

@craigmatsumoto hmmm, EVO:RAIL is just compute/storage (no networking) and even RACK just adds NSX. VMware won't get into hw, but that's ok, right? They are leaders of the software revolution in networking.

Docker was very interesting too. Esoteric but cool, especially if containers can replace VMs eventually

VMware's embrace of Docker might be another defensive move, although less so than OpenStack - they seem sincere about advancing the container cause

Interesting sessions at VMworld, too - they're just starting out with some Docker things & want input on where to take them

@craigmatsumoto it's very early with Docker, but hugely interesting and important. Kudos for VMware embracing - everyone is sorting out how this could help/hurt existing solutions

@stu I agree. VMware could've just launched massive anti-container PR - instead they're feeling out the possibilities.

very tough question Cisco has more leverage in market presence and if @vmware can change the game then Cisco might be off balance

Not just @cisco and @vmware -- but the others too such as @junipernetworks @BRCDcomm and @F5networks, among others

The whole "open" discussion is nuanced. Cisco has been building a good story - see my interview with Howie Xu https://www.youtube.... - VMware has work to do to gain open source credibility.
