How do you overcome vendor lock-in?
Doug Clark
look seriously at "open" standards such as provided by #openstack or the #cloudfoundryfoundation
Steve Strutt
#OpenStandards. Most cloud platforms today can potentially lock you in, which is why #IBM is working with #OpenStack for #IaaS and #CloudFoundry for #PaaS
Sam Garforth
payg and containers help avoid vendor lock in too
Jeffrey Borek
Also important to incorporate 'trust' into your vendor selection process. Hard at times to quantify, but if you look at the perceived Public leaders (Amazon, MS) you have to consider it.
Steve Strutt
That said there is amazing capabilities available on the cloud. Composable Services #PaaS allow you to pick and choose the best for your business and avoid lock in
Armin Razavi
@cloudstuff great technologies, but they require staff reskill. Together with process reeingineering needed for large enterprises, initial cost of adoption is quite high before real benefits are realised.
Steve Strutt
Lock is always a trade off against the unique value you can get from a vendor. Cloud is commoditising the basic function, the unqiue value is higher up
Steve Strutt
@cloudstuff good point on skills. Some are now redundant, others are reusable. #PaaS is not essential, I see clients using #DevOps and #agile to deliver #Java apps with the same developers

Job roles to consider when moving to the cloud - Thoughts on Cloud
Moving to the cloud is more than a simple technical undertaking. Business impacts around governance, change management and day-to-day operations must all be considered, and this can sometimes be a challenge. To partly address this issue, IBM introduc...

#IBMCC14 what's your view about private cloud? A few research firms doesn't even consider it as a cloud model.

Sam Garforth
private cloud is definitely cloud. It's the same technology but its the customer being their own cloud service provider. Their internal customers have the same experience as public.
Doug Clark
loads of #enterprises I talk to will use #private or #on-premise cloud based solutions...not exclusively but as a #dynamichybrid model
Niharika Trivedi
Different requirements for different industry. I see immense need of private cloud in Government..
Jeffrey Borek
IDC tracks both the Private and Public cloud infrastructure marketplaces - both are growing rapidly, outpacing the traditional IT spend
Jeffrey Borek
I do also believe that a lot of the focus will shift towards HYBRID, not that either Public or Private will go away. But early adopter clients are now looking to combine the best of both!
Sam Garforth
and containers and patterns let you move the images from one to another, ie they're closely related
Doug Clark
yup and can depend on the lifecycle of the project e.g. start in public and move to on-prem
Paul
What's the most common mistake businesses make when moving workloads to the cloud?
Doug Clark
not putting them on #IBMCloud ;o))
Paul
Haha anything else?
Sam Garforth
you need to analyse the workloads. Start with ones that are easily separated from the rest of IT dept, with low bandwidth requirements. A sudden wholesale outsourcing may not work.
Steve Strutt
Not understanding the workload before the move!
Steve Strutt
A major UK retail chain had moved its web sales to public cloud. Now moving back in house. Costing millions.
Jennifer Turner
@SteveStrutt What is the best way to recover from an implementation "mistake" and get back on track?
Doug Clark
if you think of #cloud as a #composable business then you are ultimately buying cloud a la carte - esp relevant in an open standards context, if you don't like what you bought (in principle) you can swap out to something else or swap back.
Steve Strutt
. @jentwin one of the benefits of #cloud is to lower the barrier to do new things. It allows #fastfail learn from mistakes and try again. Start simple.
Faisal Ali Khan
Important ones to note as:
- What size server, storage, and network bandwidth will I need for my current workload?
- What pricing plan should I use?
- Will moving to the cloud come out cheaper than my existing infrastructure?

How has the cloud transformed the role of the CIO? #IBMCC14

Cloud's impact on the IT team job descriptions
This was first posted on businesscloud9 in July 2012 For many people Cloud is seen as an evolution of outsourcing. By moving the traditional IT resources into a public Cloud customers can focus on ...
Sam Garforth
the CIO will become more responsible for choosing and combining cloud service providers and governance
Doug Clark
I think it's making the #CIOs role even more strategic, as we automate the back-end #SoR using #cloud, it frees the CIO to embed into and drive the direction of the business...that's building new growth without compromise!

Are there any significant risks to using the cloud? If so, what are they?
Sam Garforth
there are many things that need to be considered - data security, ITIL, integration. This is why you need to work someone who can help you with the design and migration. But there are risks of not moving too.
Doug Clark
you need to have your eyes wide open, lots of the responsibility you may take for granted from your traditional IT provider may be on your shoulders...security, back-up etc

Steve Strutt
Reputation is another aspect to consider. The application platform used has to deliver the type of user experience that is appropriate to your brand. This is as true for on-premise as it is for cloud
Niharika Trivedi
Do you thing Software Defined Environment is one of the key enablers of Cloud?
Jeffrey Borek
There are multiple entry points to Cloud, SDE is certainly one of them
Steve Strutt
Software Definition is the future of infrastructure. #SDE brings agility to infrastructure and delivery
Jeffrey Borek
People used to use the terms Internet AND intranet, but that faded into the background. How long will the adjectives Private and Public cloud be top of mind?
Sam Garforth
I'd like to move from that asap. It's better to talk about hosted, managed, on premise or off premise. Because hosted private is often called public
Doug Clark
yup and the term #cloud too....(maybe)
Steve Strutt
already becoming redundant. I see clients wanting the same capability on-prem and off-prem. The difference is about Capex vs Opex
Niharika Trivedi
What do you think is the main reason impeding organizations to quickly adopt cloud computing?
Doug Clark
I think many are using it directly from the #business community....AKA #shadowIT
Doug Clark
anything up to 500 apps are being used by the average enterprise without the IT Depts blessing if #NetSkopes studies* are accurate (* not an IBM endorsement)
Sam Garforth
job protection, fear, uncertainty, and doubt.
Sam Garforth
a benefit is the move from cap ex to op ex but if they already have investment then they may not want to move away from it
Jennifer Turner
