I think the human component is important both on the contributor side and the end user of the project

Agreed, especially for a big project with lots of different overlapping use cases, understanding the user is even more important.

Scenarios (use cases, user stories, whatever) are CRITICAL to successful open projects (both source and standards).

The genius of opensource the "humans" (people) determine the value in the actions of the community..very efficient marketplace of innovation

Opensource has changed now we are seeing new models with many "destinations" :-)

I think the cultural shift it has already driven is the incredible acceleration of development and innovation.
