Horizon6 Launch Event
Discussing the Horizon6 launch
Mark Fermin
I think I missed this, but I'm assuming there's no CCU licensing model with #Horizon6?
Rob Beekmans
Licensing is something I was trying to figure out.
Mark Fermin
yeah, either I missed it or there wasn't a lot of detail around it.
Tony Foster
Wonder how this will impact windows licensing.
Darren Henderson
TS Cals required for App demoting, normal arrangements for desktop VDA/TS Cal for Windows 7 or 8/ Windows 2008 R2
Gunnar Berger
its 250 CCU for the basic, 400 for advanced and I forget for the premium
Petri Rantanen
Just remember RDS(TS) cals are per User or Device, no CCU
Darren Henderson
@petrirantanen yeah but at least it's not like VDA !
Gunnar Berger
I'm just happy that have a per user and its not tied to the device
Gunnar Berger
and in case your interested here is a video I shot comparing RDS to VDA license: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Zl4Zot8a3Q
Comparing RDS to VDA License
Overview of RDS and VDA
Petri Rantanen
I'm trying to stay away of VDA licensing, even MS can't tell how do it right in real world
John Furrier
Is VDI set to emerge from niche to mainstream?
Crowd Captain
will it be SaaS or not? With windows XP going away how does VMware explain to IT mgrs that this is sustainable?
Rob Beekmans
over here VDI has been mainstream for a while, I've been implementing VDI for over 5 years now.
Rob Beekmans
I try to convince customers they don't need it but that's like talking to my wife....they just want it
Dave Vellante
Rob - at what point were you able to guarantee a true desktop-like experience w/ VDI - what/when was the breakthrough?
John Furrier
@robbeekmans I hear the pain points are very real and it just seems that it's been the "year of VDI" for 4 years. The stack is evolving and maturing
Rob Beekmans
The pain points are very real but that's mostly because everyone expects a Donkervoort and when they wake up it's just an Renault. Expectations are to high, marketing is working to well
Darren Henderson
only real thing hurting VDI now is VDI #fixvdi
Scott D. Lowe
I think VDI will be mainstream... eventually. But not as a big "to do" with a celebration. Naturally occurring over time.
Tony Foster
I agree Scott. How many years has it been the year of VDI? <Yawns>
Gunnar Berger
99% sure Crowd Captian and Furrier are bots everybody :)
Crowd Captain
no we are not bots we are real people
Gunnar Berger
thats what a bot would say :)
John Furrier
I am a human being I am not a bot!!!
Jim Canto
I'm a bot. @furrier and @CrowdCaptain actually have a pulse.
Jim Canto
@wonder_nerd Thanks a lot... I just spent 15 minutes watching Big Bang clips. Love that silly show. :-)
Tony Foster
lol... I just thought that clip fit... maybe were all bots & Just dont know it yet. :)
Gunnar Berger
So the question that came up in the Google Hangout is around VSAN. Its obviously a big player here what are your thoughts?
Dave Vellante
VSAN is the right direction for VMware - despite the fact that storage partners are a bit freaked out about it
Gunnar Berger
My question is cost related. I wondering with the increase in the cost of Horizon from $150 p/u to $250 how does that off set the cost benefits
Chuck Hollis
Everyone should work their own numbers, but the goal was to deliver cost savings (capex and opex) for Horizon storage.
Dave Vellante
I don't know where the X-over point is but I can almost guarantee it does NOT offset always but at some scale point it does
Chuck Hollis
what I think is important is the policy-level integration between #Horizon6 and VSAN -- it's slick, and should make a big impact in day2day ops.
Dave Vellante
It's the job of every good SW vendor to try and commoditize the HW :-)
Chuck Hollis
Of course, but there's more to it than that. One of the things that came out loud-and-clear in the announcement was integration of pieces into a whole.
John Furrier
@chuckhollis Thanks for coming to the independent crowd conversation here !! :-)
Chuck Hollis
Another tidbit: Horizon and View requirements were a major influence in VSAN design and implementation. It's a very specific workload.
John Furrier
@discoposse you are quoted in my CrowdChat. deep investment in integration with #vCO and #vCAC http://twitter.com/discoposse/status/453942567839596546
discoposse
One thing we learned from the #Horizon6 announcement is the deep investment in integration with #vCO and #vCAC. http://t.co/mzhEgerymW

Gunnar Berger
Good share, I need to learn more about this
Tommy vTexan Trogden
i'm having a hard time getting past the shirt :)
John Furrier
great video I'm trying to find an architecture slide from the event photos.. anyone have a photo of architecture?
Crowd Captain
Here is the view of the Horizon Workspace. They need to work on the UI it's not that impressive http://goo.gl/TBuEKx

Tony Foster
I happen to like the UI... there are some tweaks I would make to it, nothing substantial. Simple, is often the most elegant. #Horizon6
Rob Beekmans
The Ui is nice but my customers work from the desktop most of the time or if I force them from the startmenu. they will never see this UI if they have a choice
Tony Foster
It's really for the mobile user, 99% of desktop users wont use it. #Horizon6
Gunnar Berger
@robbeekmans its similar to StoreFront, so its just meh to me. Nothing new, but solid approach that works for Citrix
Darren Henderson
I like the simplicity of it too, I do think users will also transition away from desktops to SaaS type functionality in their personal consumer space and will take to this much easier as things progress
Scott D. Lowe
As long as it works, I'm happy.
Mark Fermin
So will VMWare start aggressively going after ELA customers running XenApp on VMWare? Seems that they have a lot to leverage right now (like XenApp 7.5 trepidation/frustration amongst Citrix customers...and those who haven't even done 6.5 migrations yet)
Rob Beekmans
If they's released this two months earliers they had a fair change of taking over some unsatisfied Citrix XenApp Advanced customers. :) with Xenapp 7.5 on the market with MCS it's a different world. we have to compare
Gunnar Berger
I think they will. Why wouldn't they, they don't need every checkbox that Citrix has. Its built of RDSH so they have a play
Rob Beekmans
like we always say "it depends"
Mark Fermin
@gunnarwb My thoughts too. The fact that its still RDSH keeps that leap pretty small. XenApp plat customers are more invested with customization, 3P solutions, etc., but Advanced customers, maybe even Ent have reason to look...
Mark Fermin
@robbeekmans Hehe - the consultant's mantra!
Rob Beekmans
that's me. doing VMware and Citrix, no fanboy of anyone... they need to pay me more (citrix and VMware that is) to be a fanboy ;)
