Cyber-Economic Attacks
Kevin Freeman author of Secret Weapon discusses his book Game Plan and coming cyber-economic attacks
John Casaretto
You mentioned this misconception that China was too invested in the US to attack it economically - Why is that a false statement?
Kevin D. Freeman
Its not entirely false but not true enough to stake our future on.
Kevin D. Freeman
China is not monolithic any more than the US. Elements in China (like the PLA) don't care if they lose money as long as they beat America.
Kevin D. Freeman
...and at some point, China will find the gains of economic attack outweigh the costs. that's when we have to worry. Putin is pushing China that direction now.
Kevin D. Freeman
What if China could take Taiwan but it would cost them $1.5 trillion in American reserves. Would they do it? Maybe. With Russian aggression example in Crimea, some in PLA are discussing it. Would we respond?
John Furrier
What does the government know and not know about the current levels and future levels of #cybersecurity warefare?
John Casaretto
Great question - has the gov't failed us on #cybersecurity and what can be done about it?
Kevin D. Freeman
The government knows that with an open society it is virtually impossible to prevent cyber attacks. Even in a closed society, such as NSA, they couldn't prevent a rogue contractor from stealing secrets (Snowden). What they are failing at is preparing reset
John Casaretto
Do you think Snowden has given surveillance info to the Russians? NSA missed intel on Crimea invasion #spyfail
Kevin D. Freeman
Don't know but seems likely...has to pay for room/board somehow. You think he could say "no" to Putin?
John Casaretto
It sounds like banks aren't exactly safe so what's the best economic plan to CYA? A lot of people talk about gold and ammo. What do you think of crypto-currency like #Bitcoin
Kevin D. Freeman
Bitcoin shows a lot of promise. The problem is government willingness to give up their monopoly on issuing currency. Do capital gains get taxed? Rep Stockman (R, TX) has introduced legislation to prevent that
Kevin D. Freeman
But, Bitcoin is very volatile right now and thus not relaible yet for currency...maybe someday if governments don't ruin it.
John Casaretto
To be clear - banks may not be safe in the event of a massive attack or may be the point of attack itself - options?
Kevin D. Freeman
Banks were directly threatened by Iranian attacks http://globaleconomicwarfare.com/2012/12/radical-islam-is-targeting-our-financial-system-banks-and-stock-exchange/
Radical Islam is Targeting our Financial System, Banks and Stock Exchange
From the beginning, we have said that this is an economic war. This is the main point of our book, Secret Weapon (http://www.secretweapon.org). We have shown in previous posts that Osama bin Laden ...
Kevin D. Freeman
Options are keeping $ in banks below FDIC limits, spreading around across various banks to lessen threat of one down
Kevin D. Freeman
Also, realize that personal accounts are protected but business accounts much less so as I explain in Game Plan
John Casaretto
Are there any specific indications outside of the obviously perilous position that a fresh cyber-attack is imminent?
Kevin D. Freeman
Direct threats from Putin and those around him: If we interfere, Russia will crash our economy: http://globaleconomicwarfare.com/2014/04/putins-direct-threat-we-are-ready-to-crash-the-dollar-from-voice-of-russia/
Putin’s Direct Threat: We Are Ready to Crash the Dollar (from Voice of Russia)
We have been saying for years that there is a global economic war underway. We have warned that Putin has long intended to attack America with a particular obsession with the reserve currency statu...
Kevin D. Freeman
Worst part is that top officials across the board, both parties, all agencies, know Russia has the capability. We assume they won't attack us because we would hit back.
John Casaretto
Any theories why your cybersecurity report to the Pentagon was essentially buried - shouldn't this be automatically public?
Kevin D. Freeman
Here's an interview with James Rickards that explains why we aren't hitting Putin back for Crimea http://www.sprottmoney.com/news/ask-the-expert-james-rickards-march-2014
Ask the Expert – James Rickards (March 2014)
In this exclusive interview, James Rickards answers questions from our readers about the gold and silver market and his outlook on the economy.   Transcript *Recorded March
Kevin D. Freeman
Answer given to Bill Gertz (arguably the best National Defense Reporter in America) was that my Pentagon report did not fit the political narrative. It was released later.
Kevin D. Freeman
I was threatened when I finished my report that it would be classified and I wouldn't be able to even read it, let alone talk about it.
John Casaretto
That was 2012 - election year so it seemed like an "inconvenient truth" (heh) that you produced proof that the 2008 crash was orchestrated
Kevin D. Freeman
The timing on the crash and how it shaped the election was the concern. Bad karma if crash got President elected....something no one in Administration wanted to be discussed.
Kevin D. Freeman
I don't make the claim that the purpose of crash was to impact the election but the timing is why people do make that claim. If it had been physical terrorism and not economic, likely McCain/Palin would have won.
Kevin D. Freeman
Even Joe Biden admitted that without market crash, Obama would have lost and McCain would have won.
John Furrier
What does the change in ICANN do to the threats increase or decrease them? Is the global internet infrastructure protected and if so how and by who? #gov20 #icann
Kevin D. Freeman
Depends on how malicious the entity in control becomes. Global internet infrastructure can be fragile if bad parties in the mix.
John Casaretto
It sounds like the #icann changes will be something to watch and there will be countries to watch for #power grabs
Kevin D. Freeman
Correct. Friends who were at #icann believe if handled well can be benign. We gave up Panama Canal though and now Chinese control both ends...so far ok but....
kytsune
What sort of a role do you think modern technologies such as Big Data and real-time analysis will serve in detecting and/or preventing some sort of economic cyberattack? Banks and others do use it for fraud detection but what about malicious actors?
Kevin D. Freeman
Almost impossible to stop. Example, Fortune 100 company almost infected by auditor who was infected by state sponored malware designed for cyber espionage
Crowd Doc
What does this group think about http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2014/04/09/heartbleed-five-questions/7501033/
Three questions about the 'Heartbleed' bug
What is Heartbleed? What sites are affected? How can I protect myself?
Kevin D. Freeman
Heartbleed is just another example of how fragile our once safe systems can be. Scariest part is that there are many more vulnerabilities yet unidentified. This one steals credentials. What about one that shuts everything down?
John Casaretto
I think many IT dept's are scrambling to update their webservers, hoping it's not too late #heartbleed - hopefully your bank is on that rapid response
Kevin D. Freeman
Fortunately personal accounts have coverage...business accounts much less so in case of hacking theft.
John Casaretto
@SecretWeaponUSA China/Russia/Cybercriminal group - how likely is it there's an internet killswitch out there?
Crowd Captain
What are your thoughts on #heartbleed and it's potential for a cyber attack ?
https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2014/04/heartbleed.html
John Casaretto
Interested in #heartbleed question as well and potential effect on financial sector
Kevin D. Freeman
As I understand it, #heartbleed is a way to steal credentials via vulnerable websites...just another example of vulnerability. But, just imagine if the whole system were taken down at once...http://globaleconomicwarfare.com/2013/12/startling-nsa-admission-

What are the most targeted and vulnerable economic US cyber attack points based on your research - top threats
Kevin D. Freeman
Top threats are financial markets (stock exchange, futures, commodities), big banks and atm networks,

@secretweaponUSA What about cyber-security in elections- could a foreign country easily affect elections and subsequent econ decisions from abroad?http://www.cnn.com/2013/03/18/tech/web/florida-election-cyberattack/
Cyberattack on Florida election raises questions
It's a fear that keeps cybersecurity experts up at night: an attack on an online election system. Now it's come to pass.
Kevin D. Freeman
Sadly, yes. And with few fingerprints. We might never know.
