Online hearing tests
Online hearing screeners won’t replace audiometric evaluations but can definitely help raise awareness. Join us as we discuss how they can be used and some of the online hearing screener benefits
Alice Smeeth
How can an online screen ensure good or accurate results?
SHOEBOX Audiometry
Online hearing tests are known to be unreliable. They are not meant to replace a diagnostic hearing evaluation or to offer a medical diagnosis, however, they can be the first step in your hearing health journey and identify your hearing ability.
SHOEBOX Audiometry
For example, SHOEBOX Online is a data-driven effective screener that uses 5 factors to correctly classify and communicate with participants about their hearing ability.
SHOEBOX Audiometry
The test will effectively categorize participants based on their hearing ability - normal hearing, some hearing loss, or significant hearing loss.
SHOEBOX Audiometry
The 5 factors that ensure effective categorization are:
1. Device and transducer compensation
2. Dynamic predictive questionnaire
3. NEW patented test methodology
4. Multi-frequency tone detection
5. Hearing level curve shape (coming soon)

That's great - thank you!

Can someone perform this screening using just the audio mic of laptop or Ipad etc without using headphones or earbuds?
SHOEBOX Audiometry
No this test is only available with headphones. It can actually be used with any headphones that someone owns.

What is the target age range for testing?
Finn Allen
The online test is designed for adults above 18 years. We have spent significant time user-testing with all age ranges specifically focusing on 45-70 to ensure it is easy and intuitive to use.

Why and how would I use one? What are the benefits of adding an online screener to my website?
SHOEBOX Audiometry
Hi Gary, thanks for asking!
SHOEBOX Audiometry
It is well-known that the majority of individuals with significant hearing loss (more than 50% in North America) have not had their hearing loss diagnosed or treated.
SHOEBOX Audiometry
SHOEBOX online is designed to be taken by individuals who perhaps are not yet ready to make a formal appointment in an audiology clinic.
SHOEBOX Audiometry
The purpose is to lower the barrier to entry into their hearing health journey.
SHOEBOX Audiometry
An online screener can help:
-Engage more people and start them sooner on their journey to hearing health
-Effectively categorize clients based on their hearing ability
Schedule follow up appointments based on test results

Thanks! Very informative
Justin Roberts
After someone takes the online hearing test will a audiogram be sent to a provider? Also can this be taken in home? Thanks!
SHOEBOX Audiometry
The participants are going to be classified in one of these 3 buckets: normal hearing, hearing loss and significant hearing loss. Participants results are stored in our web portal for you to see. And yes, this screener can be taken at home. Thanks for asking Justin!
Justin Roberts
So the results stored in the portal are they just those three buckets or will an actual audiogram be in the portal as well? Thanks!
Gail Law Newlin
What is the cost involved in this test to us?
SHOEBOX Audiometry
Hi Gail, the cost is determined based on your annual website traffic. We'll have an account manager reach out to you after the crowd chat with specifics if you'd like to provide us with your email.
Gail Law Newlin
OK. Thanks. It’s glaw@greenparkhearing.com

Also UK ENT specialist. We do not have enough PPE for intensive care physicians so audiologists will not get for a long time. Im looking for a screening audiogram online to prioritise for suture consultations or urgent treatment. therefore simple question of cost to patient?
Alice Smeeth
This is interesting. How is it added to my website? And how does it work?
SHOEBOX Audiometry
With SHOEBOX Online, you can embed the hearing screener test on your website. The Participant completes the online test & the results page button directs them to your custom web page. Participant lands on your web page & provides contact details for next steps
SHOEBOX Audiometry
or You can also directly email the SHOEBOX Online unique link to participants. By clicking on the link, participants will be able to complete the online screener. Participant results are stored in our portal against the unique link.

Do you have any video tutorials of how this works on your website that we can look at?
I am an ENT surgeon in the UK. I am interested in patients being able to do test themselves before I see them.
What is the test output? Is it like a PTA graph/chart?
Finn Allen

Why is the recommendation to use circumaural headphones over insert headphones?
SHOEBOX Audiometry
Hi Sarah, any headphones would work. With our testing we did however notice that the sound output quality was generally better with the over the ear headphones.
