Microsoft

Discuss Microsoft New CEO
"On the Record" CrowdChat to discuss the new CEO Satya Nadella starts at 9am to 3pm pst.
John Casaretto
I think the best thing about Microsoft's new CEO Satya Nadella is that foremost he's an engineer and computer scientist and that's very encouraging for the future of the company. #theCube interview was great point for insight
John Casaretto
Also why all this negativity about not bringing in an outsider - that's odd
John Furrier
quoting @mohbeen http://twitter.com/mohbeen/status/430785283848564736 >> this is the huge story imo besides the transformation at Microsoft
mohbeen
RT @meghamk: It doesn't matter where you are from or wht culture, you can truly achieve anything!!..well said @vinair believe!! #SatyaNadel

@mohbeen one important thing is the foursome at top: Thompson, Gates, Ballmer, Satya - do you think the founders will let this company not thrive - No Freaking Way. This is orchestrated and good for them; good call
John Furrier In other words this is an entourage like we've never seen before even better than google's three of page, brin, & schmidt
John Casaretto It sounds like it will not be an era of the iron fist
John Furrier
John Thompson is a great executive who has deep experience at IBM and other big companies; John will be minding the "shareholder and wall street" issues while Bill and Satya kick ass on rebooting $msft nice team https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3K5lloQTT8

Sylvie Otten (Sollod
He's terrific - He knew my Dad at IBM - and nothing but praise for this man!
Deepak Seth
How do you think the Chairman / Tech Adviser roles play out?
Crowd Captain Chairman will handle admin, wall street, shareholder issues --keeping them out of the "kitchen"; Gates gets a tech playground to bone up on current tech; Ballmer cheers, Satya gets his running shoes on.. sound good :-)
Deepak Seth
Nadella selection also breaks the glass ceiling in terms of non founder India born person becoming a CEO of major technology firm
John Furrier
This is big (huge) news imo; a great success story not surprised at all with it. Diversity of applications meets diversity of talent = #theFuture
David Coursey
He is about as American as someone not born her can be.
Deepak Seth Sure, but the optics is important and relevant too. Some other companies such individuals are confined to "techie" role
Deepak Seth Also #microsoft is as global as can be....
David Coursey
More important: He is a citizen of Microsoft, the transnational.
John Furrier very true on the #msft being transnational
John Furrier
Microsoft has the largest R&D outside of the US in India of all firms in tech. I wonder what the headcount breakdown is by country for #developers ?
Michael Keen
Based upon this exchange it may be some turbulent times for #microsoft in the next few years http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2013-09-07/news/41854900_1_azure-microsoft-corporation-bing
Can India-born Satya Nadella be CEO of Microsoft? Forrester believes so - Economic Times
NEW DELHI: Satya Nadella, 44, executive vice president, cloud and enterprise services Microsoft Corporation is among the front runners to occupy the CEO chair at Microsoft. Can Hyderabad born
John Furrier
I agree he has a huge task ahead of him; what to do first? they need to win the enterprise and make sure a self directed xBox GM runs that well. xBox is the future imo in consumer
Michael Keen I would agree wholeheartedly on the consumer side. The enterprise will come down to getting out of the building and visiting customers. Not just Fortune 50, but the SMB and get back in touch
Deepak Seth
The Billion dollar question is - can an "insider" really and truly bring about breakthrough transformation? Any examples from history?
John Furrier
Steve Jobs was the ultimate insider at Apple and Satya is proud indian exec with the "godfather" in Gates getting back in the game imo; I think that Gates is loving it bc he can play with out BS overhead; Gates is geek remember
John Furrier
good thread @SetDeep ; Gates is out of touch and Satya isn't (see our interview with him) Gates gets apprentice to run the show while he gets to be "captain of the ship" without the hassles - that's my narrative opinion
Deepak Seth So you think it will be @BillGates rule by proxy for a few years till Nadella comes of age as CEO?
Deepak Seth The mentor-mentored relationship can be fraught with tension too. Let's see how it plays out. remember Sculley/Jobs or even Schmidt/Brin,Page
John Furrier
Question for Crowd: Do you think Gates is really on board or it is posturing for PR optics?
Deepak Seth
Co-opting @BillGates as an adviser is a very smart and stretegic move by Nadella
Deepak Seth
Having the visible backing of Gates and access to his wisdom is definitely a plus
Deepak Seth
Nadella then need to make a call about what he uses and what he filters out.
Michael Keen
Nadella needs to understand that "what got you here may kill you there". Transformation doesn't just happen by declaring a change; it is necessary to dig deep into the roots of the company.
John Furrier
Gates is the wild card if Nadella can get a resource to assist him in herding the cats and killing turf wars; then the five families internally can get back to running the neighborhood
Deepak Seth
Having been in the company for 22 years, Nadella knows the roots. lol he may be one of the "roots" itself
John Furrier
Microsoft has two enemies 1) themselves and 2) wolves of wall street - I like the team they have around @satyanadella @billgates Ballmer Thompson - he has his entourage; #positive
John Furrier
Got some push back on Facebook thread and what I meant was the management of shareholders is an isuse and John Thompson gives air cover to the short terms pressures of institutional stakeholders
John Furrier
My angle on $msft :
1. 1997 the inflection point when DoJ took their heart & soul
2. 2001 Google rises & dominates after dotcom bubble
3. 2004 Zuck started 10yr anniversary
4. 2007 iPhone is launched - the world's Mac moment - smartphone revolution
John Furrier
Issues for $msft1. What would the "old Microsoft" do in todays hypercompetitive cloud business - win the enterprise and developers
2. Google cloud is a bust? Or is it wait to be awaken
3. Facebook is the new operating system for cloud - Fb.com app, messen

Dave Vellante
is the monopoly finally over?
John Furrier gr8 pt by @dvellante this might be the event that takes the shackles off of $msft to be that competitive leader again #newblood #GatesIsBack
John Furrier
Enabling broad ecosystem is fundamentally $msft vision says Satya; they want to bring those partnerships to a new ecosystem not being static but dynamic for the company
