Choosing #BigData solutions
Companies are so eager to find a #bigdata solution they aren't taking time to find #TheRightSolution
Dez Blanchfield
Who are the idea people to "sponsor" the conversation regarding Choosing #BigData solutions, where should discussion "start" to get a great outcome?
Dez Blanchfield
I know that @joe_caserta has some world leading experience here, Joe where should the discussion start inside an organisation?
Joe Caserta
At the top, ideally. It's a lot easier to institute change if the business is on-board
Dez Blanchfield
What do you use to kick off that conversation, what are some opening "lines" to stimulate ideas and willingness to consider particular approaches?
Dez Blanchfield
@joe_caserta - is there a risk of putting some noses out of joint if you don't include the entire CxO suite in the discussion?
Dez Blanchfield
@joe_caserta - is there discussion taking place already in the board room or is this still something knocking on the door trying to get in?
Joe Caserta
it depends on the organization. The ones that adapt the fastest are the ones where the CxO suite is receptive. That's why the #CDO is becoming so important in business. @Buzzfeed just announced a new VP of #Data this week
Dez Blanchfield
What about when we get out of traditional enterprise models, say Federal or State government, they are very different types of organisations to interface with..
Dez Blanchfield
What is the right approach to choosing a #BigData solution @joe_caserta ?
Joe Caserta
To begin with, there's no "one-size-fits-all" approach when it comes to #BigData, so it's important to really assess your needs before you dive in.
Dez Blanchfield
how long should organisations wait before they bring in external expert skills to help them?
Dez Blanchfield
There are so many risks & pitfalls, what are some you've seen appear too often @joe_caserta ?
Joe Caserta
I don't know that it's necessarily as much about time as it is about what comes of that initial conversation -- you either have the right skills or you don't. Of course, simply starting a conversation w an expert never hurts
Joe Caserta
One of the ones we see a lot is companies expecting an "out-of-the-box" solution to magically meet all their needs. Every #data problem is unique and should be treated as such
Dez Blanchfield
@joe_caserta - indeed, every solution starts with a conversation ( and coffee )
Dez Blanchfield
@joe_caserta - do out of the box solutions deliver on the promise of #BigData or are they merely a building block to "start with"?
Joe Caserta
At @CasertaConcepts we treat out of the box solutions as the latter, but that doesn't mean they won't work on their own for some. It all goes back to assessing need.
Joe Caserta
Would you agree?
Dez Blanchfield
Completely agree, #ShadotIT has all too often had folk with no skill build something quickly and cheaply with a "building block" and then come horribly "unstuck" ;-(
Joe Caserta
interestingly, even though #bigdata is an engineering exercise, we are engaged more and more by the business - or #data office - for solutions -- not so much by IT anymore.
Dez Blanchfield
reminds me of when spreadsheets became a thing and every day computer users gained access to the power of spreadsheeting ;-)
Dez Blanchfield
@joe_caserta - does this exclude engineering or technical folk from the conversation, where and when are they relevant now?
Dez Blanchfield
@joe_caserta - do you think the big 5x vendors @cloudera @hortonworks @mapr @pivitol @ibmbigdata @oracle @sap etc are ready for this change in approach?
Joe Caserta
in terms of communication or the products themselves?
Dez Blanchfield
@joe_caserta - let's focus on the discussion of the general topic of "The right Big Data solution" first"..
Joe Caserta
Great idea. Loving the impromptu session, but I do have to log off shortly. How about we get something a bit more formal on the calendar? Monday at 3:00 pm ET?
