What does the future hold for #DevOps?
botchagalupe
I hope includes not using the term anymore and getting back to the core focus ideals...
Mark Thiele he/him
Like @botchagalupe says, that we get past nomenclature and get on with designing for innovation and delivery that meets or exceeds business needs.
Mark Wyllie
i agree, i think it will "eliminate" that term because the tools and platforms will become seamless
Don Thomas
"Two Speed" IT" will be with us for a while still. Process and tooling innovation that spans those worlds will create differentiation
Todd Moore
#DevOps is a business and cultural change set to spark increased business velocity. Only time will tell what it becomes in the steady state after years of practice. Teams can build technical debt in any process.
Rich Miller
@botchagalupe "I hope includes not using the term anymore…" +10
Jonas Jacobi
The perfect toaster!
James Urquhart
The addition of business and security.
Mark Wyllie
but does it toast bagels?
Leslie
It's no longer a "thing," it's just how software is developed.
Mark Thiele he/him
@jonasjacobi I want a perfect toaster.. The one I have doesn't even do toast the same from one half to the other. Where's the DevOps in that?
Tim Crawford
...another vote for abolishing the #DevOps term.
Tim Crawford
@tmmoore_1 IT (ie: DevOps) won't decide that. The non-IT business orgs will. (mic drop)
botchagalupe
two speed it is the not devops... it's silly...
Amy Hermes
but what to call it @tcrawford -- we've heard #NoOps and other such things...
Amy Hermes
Wait -- who handed the mic to @tcrawford ?? // @tmmoore_1
Tim Crawford
@amyhermes We really need to get away from all of these tech terms that we spend endless roundabouts trying to define.
botchagalupe
two speed it is totally ridicules ... speed 1 = no innovation... watch the #DOES videos and learn..
Tim Crawford
@amyhermes Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I ripped it out of someone's hand. Isn't that what social media is all about? :)
Amy Hermes
Don't disagree @tcrawford but then Twitter conversations and conference hallway talks would be so much less fun, no? Clarity is always in demand.
Tim Crawford
@botchagalupe You're on a fool's errand. The two speed thing is dying fast.
Amy Hermes
Depends on who you ask @tcrawford #ISayTomato and @rhm2k says eggplant. ;)
botchagalupe
speaking of toasters... I want one that burns an image of Jimi Hendrix
Rich Miller
Thanks @KevJosephAllen and @amyhermes … definitely a great conversation with an all-star cast. TYVM.
Tim Crawford
@botchagalupe Can we just go back to those toasters that fly?
Rich Miller
@amyhermes No, I say "aubergine".
botchagalupe
@tcrawford that's what I was saying... meaning ppl who say 2 spped/bi modal are saying that there's' no need to innovate that half.
botchagalupe
@botchagalupe or.. really don't understand innovation .. or want to sell you something...

What do you think is the true measurement of success for DevOps?
James Urquhart
A successful business?
Jonas Jacobi
An ambidextrous toaster
Todd Moore
More lemonade stands
Rich Miller
The measure of success would probably be the ability to successfully embrace increasing automation, without increasing headcount, and the maintenance or improvement of 'resilience' (<- @jamesurquhart )
Leslie
Every software development team considering infrastructure and operational concerns throughout their product lifecycle.
James Urquhart
DevOps exists to enable software to better meet the needs of the business. Period.
Mark Thiele he/him
That you can do more, do it faster, and do it with more success.
Rich Miller
@jamesurquhart "to better meet the NEEDS of the business", or the NERDS of the business?
Tim Crawford
I'm w/ @jamesurquhart: Metrics need to be in business terms. Automation for the sake of automation is like tech for the sake of tech.
Amy Hermes
*giggles* @rhm2k -- aren't those the same thing?
Tim Crawford
@rhm2k If they are nerds of business...they probably are pretty focused on the needs of the business. :)
botchagalupe
. @tcrawford It's understanding business value .. see "Art of Business Value"
Tim Crawford
@botchagalupe Spot on! You're preaching to the choir.
Tim Crawford
@botchagalupe ...but we are both assuming that one truly understands what business value means.
James Urquhart
@rhm2k Not what I mean. Successful DevOps enables better/faster delivery (and operation) of software that drives better agility.
IBM Cloud
What would you say is the most important thing to keep in mind when thinking about security?
Rich Miller
You REALLY want us to boil that down to ONE thing? SRSLY???
Amy Hermes
Should be an easy task for TMMIC @rhm2k -- no?!?
Rich Miller
The most important thing to keep in mind: You will never solve security definitively.
Leslie
Ensure that every attack vector that you can think of is tested and monitored and alerts/prevents deployments/rejects PR's if it fails. Never rely on humans to catch security threats.
IBM Cloud
OK, @rhm2k — you can give us your top 5.
James Urquhart
There is no fixed way of doing systems security. The key is constantly measuring and understanding how systems interact with each other and the outside world. It is a constant game of learning.
Rich Miller
Thinking about the possibilty of security breach, it's never "if" but always "when".
Todd Moore
Security is so big and goes in so many directions to find the vulnerabilities from code to hardware to physical security. The one thing is therefore it is so big that you need to cast a wide net around it.
Dr. Angel Luis Diaz
@rhm2k I agree - there are so many. One that folks forget about often are Potentially Unwanted Applications - stale applications live forever.
Abby Kearns
@rhm2k and to add..how your org responds in the event of a breach.
Dr. Angel Luis Diaz
@lesliegeek Agreed - I also love hackathons focused on breaking things. Reminds me of the office space copier scene. https://www.youtube....
Rich Miller
And to @lesliegeek 's earlier comment, it's more often about 'who' rather than 'what'/
Leslie
@ab415 Good point - do people feel comfortable reporting problems and having serious introspective post-mortems?
Mark Thiele he/him
This is not a question for this group for this small time slot. Security is as much about the people and on going process as it is about any specific security tool or fix. Hard to focus on one w/o the other.
Amy Hermes
Perhaps @rhm2k should do a "Top 5" blog post... @IBMcloud
Amy Hermes
Sounds like a good #CloudMinds huddle topic to me @mthiele10 #SeeWhatIDidThere ;)
Rich Miller
@amyhermes Can I bring Letterman out of retirement to read them?
Todd Moore
@rhm2k So it is a "when" situation. But when it happens, the surface area needs to be minimized, and you can make lemonade out of those lemons that result.
Amy Hermes
I nominate the honorable @KevJosephAllen @rhm2k :)
botchagalupe
A holistic mindset... Systems thinking ... the really hard stuff
