A Glimpse into Hybrid Cloud
Let's chat about the ingredients that make the perfect Hybrid Cloud Recipe
jrapoza
With virtualization, some think it's an either or situation, public cloud or on-premise. But research shows that there are benefits to a hybrid approach that combines both. What benefits do you see or expect to see from a hybrid cloud/on-premise approach?
Mark van Oppen
Great question. Many people use a hybrid approach for burst-able capacity.
Mark van Oppen
For example, retail stores around the holidays experience much higher traffic.
jrapoza
That is a classic reason for hybrid. But there can be other benefits, especially when it comes to getting the best of both on-premise and cloud.
jrapoza
Our research shows a hybrid approach brings increased agility, reduced facilities demands and a reduction in IT costs. And they have better application performance and are able to deploy applications more quickly.
Mark van Oppen
additionally, many customers have a mix of security requirements for various applications. Some require data sovereignty and others can be hosted in a public cloud. Sometimes dev/test can be one or the other as well.
Bill Hladik
Public clouds offer an opex spending model whereas private clouds usually offer a capex spending model. There are times where each is appropriate for a business.
Chandra Mukhyala
There are obvious benefits of private and public cloud but managing the two(or more) clouds as silos is inefficent and sometimes high on OPEX, thats where hybrid cloud comes- allows managing them as one cloud and scale on-demand to public cloud
Chandra Mukhyala
for ex: let a policy dictate when to automatically move data from private to/from public
Mark van Oppen
agreed, driving an identical user experience between hosting locations and types is key.
jrapoza
Great observation. This goes along with the benefit we've seen of lower IT expenses after hybrid cloud is implemented.
Chandra Mukhyala
For Storage, public cloud can be simply be an additional tier of on-premise storage just like, flash, HDDs and tape and data could move transparently between tiers based on a policy
Bill Hladik
Private clouds are still necessary for certain clients governed by regulatory bodies that limit where data can be and what human resources can operate on that data,
Mark van Oppen
Very true. Sharing an administrative back plane has been a major problem for HIPAA or PCI compliant customers. This is what drove #BlueBoxCloud to create a PCaaS.
jrapoza
This is a great point Bill. To me it underlines the strength of hybrid. Letting you retain security in some areas while gaining scale and flexibility of public cloud.
jrapoza
Aberdeen research shows that the top virtualization and cloud hurdles are concerns about security, integration and tech maturity. What, if any, are your top challenges?
Bill Hladik
Splitting application components between onprem and public clouds is often an architectural challenge requiring knowledge of how those components talk to each other. DB vs web vs app as an example. The network interconnect is key.
jrapoza
I totally agree. This kind of gets to the integration questions, which we found was very important for businesses.
Mark van Oppen
Our customers often express a desire to remain vendor agnostic, rather than chaining themselves to #AWS proprietary standards long term. A combination of #VMware and #OpenStack has been a winning strategy we've seen.
jrapoza
How important do you think it is to get your on-premise virtualization prepared to integrate with the cloud?
Bill Hladik
If cloud becomes a capacity expansion of onprem then most clients will want to use it just like they consume onprem capacity. It has to be transparent.
Robert Speller
What workloads is your company considering moving into Cloud?
jrapoza
It's gotten pretty diverse. Seeing more Tier 1 type applications moving to the cloud.
Mark van Oppen
The vast majority of #BlueBoxCloud customers start with a dev/test environment, with minimal risk. And in a green field deployment, vendor neutral technology is a powerful story.
