Niharika Trivedi
Can Edge Delivery and SoftLayer work together?
Juergen Loeb
No limitation to use Edge across the different deliver centers
Ramesh Menon
IBM is expanding cognitive platform like Watson to enhance cyber capabilities by integrating threat intelligence and threat kinetics and expect to see some cognitive solutions for protecting critical infrastructure ..
Dan Schaffer
@NiharSTrivedi Absolutely! Edge Delivery is enabled by DNS, so any cloud platform is compatible, including SoftLayer.
Juergen Loeb
@NiharSTrivedi and it can help to enable Hybrid models. THe CDN can hide the complexity
Juergen Loeb
@RMenon_CTO Working the step before to start with analytics .. Cognitive is on the roadmap,
Dan Schaffer
@RMenon_CTO Edge Delivery's security capabilities are already utilizing IBM Security Analytics and Data Sources. Excited to see what the Watson team is doing and integrate into Edge Delivery!
Juergen Loeb
@RMenon_CTO in addition to Dan.. Cognitive has multiple flavors. In security but also you can think on intelligent decision making in combination with broker.
Ramesh Menon
Edge will become more important as IoT becomes main stream, here's a link to sample reference architectures https://developer.ib...
Harris Sussman
@schaffer_akamai definitely seems like there are industries like energy and FS that would be prime from a big data perspective
Denyse Mackey
How Edge Delivery leverages Cloud? And how it is deployed in cloud?
Juergen Loeb
In Web performance we reroute the traffic.. It's not a huge difference between on premise and cloud because we are outside the DC.
Dan Schaffer
@denysemackey Cloud Infrastructure and Services are integrated the same way as a traditional DC. If your commerce platform is built on IaaS with a custom app, or enabled with the WebSphere Commerce PaaS application, Edge Delivery works.
Juergen Loeb
@denysemackey and security on Edge is absolutely independent from the compute center type
Dan Schaffer
@denysemackey Any Application, hosted anywhere, that has a url, delivers over HTTP, and resolved with a DNS record is a good fit.
Doug Jones
Q.13) It sounds like I need a CDN. What are the values IBM Edge Delivery Services provides as part of web delivery?
Dan Schaffer
IBM Edge Delivery Services provides a suite of CDN, Security, and Platform services. Leverage Edge Delivery for guaranteed performance improvements of up to 100%.
Dan Schaffer
Secure your web applications and entire Data Centers against the largest attacks in the world. Manage images, marketing URLs, bot traffic, and more with easy to use tools.

Harris Sussman
Edge Delivery certainly has the greatest breadth, security and reliability for improving web infrastructure
Harris Sussman
One should think about deploying Edge Delivery when deploying and new application
Doug Jones
Q.9) What is the best way to protect my web business site/compute center?
Juergen Loeb
All Internet facing application are potential candidates for different type of attacks where I have to be prepared.
Juergen Loeb
Classically the attack is handled at the compute center border where I install WAF-Web application firewalls, handle DDoS –Distributed Denial of Service- attacks and have installed other rule based protection.
Juergen Loeb
It requires continuous maintenance and 7/24 operation to react on attacks close to the point they are started with very experience and skilled resources.
Juergen Loeb
Gartner and Forrester expect that this model will not scale and I have to think on protection which starts away from my internet connection.
Dan Schaffer
If you are seeking a complete defense, we will need to break attacks into 2 categories. You will need a volume defense and a web application vulnerability defense.
Dan Schaffer
Volumetric attacks are often called Distributed Denial of Service attacks, and can overwhelm datacenters with even the largest inbound service capacity.
Dan Schaffer
Web application vulnerabilities can allow even just a single malicious request to result in downtime, datatheft, or defacement.
Dan Schaffer
You’ll want network and application firewall appliances in your datacenter, as well as a remote scrubbing and web application firewall solution.

Will #SDN Infrastructure add more security?
Doug Jones
Q.7) So CDNs can cache content, offload traffic from my DC, and help with disaster/unplanned maintenance recovery. Can I expect anything else from a CDN?
Dan Schaffer
Content Delivery Networks optimize delivery of your web content for performance, availability, and security. Industry leaders in the space focus on caching content close to end users and accelerating unique requests to and from the Data Center
Dan Schaffer
Some are capable of providing remote defense against Web Application and Volumetric attacks, and they can offer a host of other services like DNS resolution, load balancing, image management, bot management.
Dan Schaffer
These capabilities apply to any website, streaming content, or application as long as the content is delivered over the Internet.
Juergen Loeb
Let me look on CDN from a costing/usage angle. A CDN normally provides baseline cost and consumption elements without limitations in maximum volumes.
Juergen Loeb
With the CDN you’re now more flexible to reflect real consumption and react on demand change (in scale, in regions) without manual intervention.
Juergen Loeb
For sure you have to take care for the resources in your backend systems but not at the same timeline you have to react on the frontend site.
Harris Sussman
the re-routing capability of a cloud platform can quickly mitigate downtime and maintain SLA's as well
Denyse Mackey
Share your thoughts on #WebInfraChat ...Is there a way how we can scope our required Web resources for new Web application?
Harris Sussman
using performance tools can definitely help in scoping need
Harris Sussman
there are both live and synthetic
Juergen Loeb
Good questions.. I would go the other way round. Let's understand how a client scope today and show him the way to go different.
Denyse Mackey
@Juergen_Loeb What are the key things we should keep in mind while understanding a client scope?
Dan Schaffer
The monthly delivered traffic, mix of devices accessing the site, and performance expectations in each of the customer's key geography.
Harris Sussman
Definitely want to be mindful of what they're trying to accomplish. If performance is key, the offer should demonstrate improvement
Juergen Loeb
The key points are -
expected number of concurrent users / peak loads like web campaigns / transaction business
Harris Sussman
if reliability is a key factor, then ensure the offer being used has the necessary redundancy
Doug Jones
Q.8) How hard is it to integrate a CDN, and when is the right time, before, during, or after my DC migration or upgrade?
Juergen Loeb
CDN is thinking different to deliver IT services and requires to get IT and business on the same page because it’s direct connected to the application but not to the client IT infrastructure.
Juergen Loeb
At this point CIO, CMOs and business line leaders have to establish a joined strategy on CDN integration and responsibility. CIO can benefit by providing more consumption elements, reduce bandwidth requirements and get more flexible.
Juergen Loeb
CMO can drive end user experience excellence and the business line can possibly increase the speed to market and decrease initial IT investments.
Dan Schaffer
Most CDNs are easy to integrate. Industry leaders require only a DNS record change to seamlessly receive requests from your users and direct the unique requests back to your DC.
Dan Schaffer
Because these CDNs do not impact your hardware or software, you can integrate any time to see immediate benefits.
Dan Schaffer
In general, integrating before a change is good because CDNs have a variety of mitigation techniques in the event of unplanned downtime during an upgrade.
