Q3 What do you think that the future will bring in the world of the IoT? Better lives or the loss of the privacy? http://www.via-cc.at...
Ryan Begley
I don't think it's one or the other. Better lives and the notion of privacy are both socially defined concepts, independent of each other.
Ryan Begley
I do think IoT will improve life in a number of ways, access to information, improved and cheaper access to healthcare, improved services around chronic disease management, elder care, wellness, etc.
Ryan Begley
I think privacy is not entirely something that gets lost in the next 20 years due to IoT, perhaps changes, or evolves, but that is something that has always happened. Each generation or region has a slightly different notion of what privac
Ryan Begley
privacy is
Betsy Miller Daitch
I believe it is our duty to protect privacy while enhancing the lives of consumers by removing friction between completing tasks allowing for superior productivity and less stress.
Kal Gyimesi
too many companies afraid of the privacy implications. They need to understand best ways to blindly aggregate/segment data so that it has value while protecting privacy
Tori McClellan
I believe it will make life simpler once put in the hands of businesses and consumers who know to use it properly. With the elaborate connection, privacy is lost, but life will be better
Neil Postlethwaite
agree - as long as I see something back in return, I'm willing to give up a little bit of privacy
Neil Postlethwaite
if you give me a cheaper insurance policy, I'll let you see how I'm driving
Ryan Begley
@neilpos I'm willing to give up a lot!
Kevin Condron
I agree Neil. Happy to play a part in the bargain
Neil Postlethwaite
but there will always be a balance and that's the key to find
Ryan Begley
@neilpos yes exactly - there is a market for what's private, so long as the owner and the buyer agree on an exchange that is fair to both parties
Ryan Begley
@peter_ryans no problem
Kevin Condron
I think a lot of people would be surprised to know what "privacy" they'd already given up without even knowing it
Keith Collyer
@peter_ryans think of facebook, google, you use it for free, the product they sell is knowledge about you
Kevin Condron
Is there a risk that IoT will increase the gap between those who are connected and those who are not?
Neil Postlethwaite
I also think, we can do a lot without impacting privacy. The great home care technologies I see working today, all work without privacy impacting itemrs like cameras. They work more subtely, with things like passive power monitoring
cristene j g-w
@peter_ryans is that because you're cheap or you value convenience so much? j/k ;-)
Ryan Begley
@neilpos the value add is tremendous there
Ryan Begley
@hermione1 both, mostly cheap
Kal Gyimesi
@neilpos I agree with the insurance one.... if there's something in it for me, I've been exploring it w/ our kids auto policies... of course, I'm making the decision for them to give up their privacy to speed
Ryan Begley
@kalgyimesi panasonic and allianz formed a joint offering
Kevin Condron
@kalgyimesi You're too kind Kal! I hope your kids appreciate your generosity!!
cristene j g-w
a while back HBR discussed a personal database to auction off detailed personal data and control who has access. #IoT needs one...
Ryan Begley
facebook is very concerned with this
Ryan Begley
@hermione1 facebook and google actually are concerned about this concept
Veena Pureswaran
Hopefully privacy and value are not mutually exclusive @IBM_Electronics
Neil Postlethwaite
! @kalgyimesi and I'm sure they love you for it ;o) but it's a really good thing, especially given young driver accident stats - it's not just about insurance, safety is key too
Neil Postlethwaite
worth making sure you take a peek at out IoT security PoV too ... http://ibm.co/1SI6Ll...
Bob Pulver
@hermione1 do you have link to HBR piece? Curious to read in context of #socialanalytics
cristene j g-w
@peter_ryans interestingly, all #iot data is not equal. people who are willing to give you data are not always the one who's data is valuable
Kal Gyimesi
@neilpos especially for the ones who've been nabbed a few times by the police already.... and have an accident on their record
Charli Francis
- Should there be concern about the malicious harvesting of data?
IBM_Electronics
Question from @hermione1 We need to consider transparency, privacy and usage as all separate domains for contracting with the customer. And what happens in a breach?
