Ready for Data: VMworld prep
The theme for VMworld 2015 is “Ready for Any” – and Commvault definitely is. Are you? Let's chat!

#CVchatThe Need for OpennessDiscussing customer concerns in a disruptive market and the need for openness in the cloud journey
Data Definer
Q1: What sessions are you most looking forward to at #VMworld 2015?
leotignini
I’m looking forward to learning more about the 4 Keys to Avoiding the Hidden Costs of Cloud Adoption. I know Commvault has talked a lot in recent months but I’d interested to see how audiences respond to it. #CVchat #ReadyForAny

Check out INF6250-SPO - Beyond Cloud Backup: Enabling Disaster Recovery and Workload Portability. Robbie explains why cloud backup isn’t just a feature you “turn on”.
Andrea R Johnson
@datadefiner I’m excited for “4 Keys to Avoiding the Hidden Costs of Cloud Adoption” #CVchat #ReadyforAny
Melissa Harvey
A1: Organizations often talk of hidden costs so I’m interested in how the audience responds to Commvault’s 4 keys to avoiding the hidden costs of cloud adoption session #CVchat #ReadyforAny
John Furrier
I'm looking forward to the #devops content and new updates on vCloud and how that impacts storage and networking

Q5: How do orgs avoid hidden costs of cloud adoption?
leotignini
Interesting blog by @Commvault 's Phil Curran on this here: http://bit.ly/1U6FCf... #VMworld
Data Definer
Just like I don't leave the water running in my house 24x7, neither should your (unused) VMs run 24x7. Easy with @Commvault software!
Sobeida Cabrera
they should consider DR to the cloud. @commvault can help you #cvchat #vmworld

Another example: Retiring stale VMs. Great for legacy apps / guest OS / etc. (e.g. - SQL 2008 on W2k3)
Bill Roberts
You need to understand your data first.

Q6: Is backup TO the cloud really just a tape replacement?
Data Definer
A6: Let's 1st define it: Cloud backups involve placing data on off-site storage ... (1/2)
Data Definer
A6: that is owned and maintained by a third-party vendor who charges a fee based on the service level provided to the user. (2/2)
Data Definer
A6: LOTS of benefits: greater flexibility and reliability. Biggest challenge I've experienced is the initial 'seeding' of data to the cloud provider.
gregorydwhite
A6 - there is some increased expectation of availability I think. so tape replacement but with some more advantages is what i hear. it's not all faster often due to bandwidth but select access can be better
Data Definer
And @gregorydwhite -- WAN bandwidth is often a factor.
Angela Salerno
@datadefiner you're using backup and archive synonymously. Different tactics but both can be cloud-forward. #CommvaultCan #CVchat #ReadyforCloud
Bill Roberts
also helps if the provider can be a target for restore to the cloud, to help eliminate managing infrastructure at DR site
John Furrier
I'm interested in the rumors of a VMware led takeover of EMC. Thoughts on this ?
Data Definer
re/code has a good scoop on this today: http://recode.net/20...
Bill Wohl
John, I'm more interested in talking about @Commvault as a true independent and trusted advisor to companies about Data Protection. Rumors or not -- customers want focus on their success, not their vendor's #CVChat #CommvaultVM
leotignini
Sounds like EMC has enough on their plate but I'll believe it when I see it.
John Furrier
I agree Bill this story is a distraction to the value being created
Data Definer
Q4: What big news do you anticipate coming out of #VMworld 2015?
Data Definer
News on VMware's implementation of containers should be interesting. #devops
gregorydwhite
Containers is definitely something I want to get more understanding around and how they are being used and the data management implications
Bill Wohl
Really excited to unveil aspects of our new @Commvault brand at #VMWorld 2015 in SF. I think people will be surprised by it #CommvaultVM #CVChat #ReadyForAny
Data Definer
Q2: What sessions are you NOT looking forward to at #VMworld?
Data Definer
I love it all, but since I'm not into networking, the NSX sessions aren't on my radar.
gregorydwhite
I hear you! But not b/c I don't love my networking peeps out there. They are the DOT for data!
Angela Salerno
Not as formal session but I'm curious to see what's going to come out of the hosted hackathon
Data Definer
Q7: How do virtual and converged infrastructures affect your VM backup and recovery?
Data Definer
Recent releases of VMware Virtual Volumes (vVols) and VMware Virtual SAN (vSAN) have added new challenges to implementing datastores.
John Furrier
this will impact the buying and deployments esp with workload mobility being the top priority so the architectures need take that into consideration
Sobeida Cabrera
and how do we know the data is protected for every SLA – and not just in your virtual infrastructure
Bill Wohl
Great to see @robertswm and @SobeCabreraCVLT on the #CVChat to represent @Commvault #CommvaultVM Way to #Represent @Commvault
Data Definer
Q3: Any sessions you wish were being held at #VMworld that aren’t?
Data Definer
A3: Like to see more business-level discussions on financials, sales, human resources, etc.
