Q3. We're talking multiracial unity in racial landscape. So far, we've said: we need a new name to signify people of color; we need to center anti-blackness; we need multiracial dialogue. How abt some best practices? @glennharriscsi @lsarsour @tia_oso @marisa_franco
Linda Sarsour
Show up for other communities. Work intersectionally. We are not one-issued communities, nor homogenous groups even amongst Blacks, Latinos, Arabs and South Asians.
Tia Oso
Best practices definitely begin with building relationships, and making a commitment to NOT throw other POC under the bus.
Ctr4SocialInclusion
multilingual political ed materials and trainings
Deepa Iyer
@lsarsour How have MASA communities done that esp around movement to support Black lives?
Marisa Franco
Root the conversations in practice. Instead of 'we think' or 'we need' it should be 'we do' 'we tried, and this is what we learned'
Linda Sarsour
Organizing events, rallies, conversations about Black Lives Matter in non-Black communities & working towards action.
glenn harris
We need shard analysis and aligned strategies across communities.
Tia Oso
@lsarsour Agreed on all points. We have to connect, fight together and commit to getting free together. And be real about what our folks are up against and who the real enemy is.
Deepa Iyer
Yes, @marisa_franco: this work is messy, right?! And that's alright too. We don't have a roadmap, and it's okay to make mistakes.
Marisa Franco
Its easy on paper, in books. Real time scenarios are more complicated, but I feel thats where we stand a chance for these conversations to go beyond very small groupings of people.
Linda Sarsour
Centering anti-Black racism in conversations w/ Arab and South Asian Muslim communities has been eye-opening and necessary.
Deepa Iyer
@glennharriscsi Glenn - so a set of principles and guidelines around practice, as @marisa_franco and @tia_oso have said?
glenn harris
Truth. We need to take more chances with each other
Linda Sarsour
Trust. Share pain. Get free together and know we can't do it without one another.
Deepa Iyer
@marisa_franco: How do you see multiracial unity playing out in immigrant rts movements? What can we do to fill the gaps?
Janelle S. Wong
@glennharriscsi Yes - risks and ... forgive mistakes as we all learn
Deepa Iyer
@tia_oso: Your work at @BAJItweet focuses on bridging relationships b/w immigrants and Black communities. What have been challenges? Successes?
glenn harris
These are real challenges. CPA in Oakland is an example of sitting with the tension and naming strategies for moving forward.
Tia Oso
Challenges are in addressing real tensions and differences, educating folks about one another's struggles. Which is ongoing work, within Black communities and w/other POC.
Deepa Iyer
@glennharriscsi Sometimes, very important to acknowledge the tensions and the flashpoints, rather than gloss over them.
Tia Oso
We have had many successes, including the Free the People Caravan @bajitweet #BAJIOAK led. A multiracial campaign that successfully freed a Ghanian Asylum seeker being indefinitely detained.
glenn harris
Flashpoints can be a real opportunity to take on the hard conversations.
Tia Oso
Also successful was @bajitweet #TransformationalSolidarity webinar, where hundreds of IR advocates learned about solidarity w/ #BlackLivesMatter Video Available here: www.blackalliance.or...
Marisa Franco
Immigrant rights has several problems, including anti-blackness. But also, severe partisanship, political opportunism and putting orgl interests over greater good. Can't separate or else it can perpetuate what is causing so much harm for imm cmty.
Deepa Iyer
Q. 4 So far, we have been talking about our own communities. What is the role of government, educators, public stakeholders in face of changing racial landscape? @lsarsour @glennharriscsi @tia_oso @marisa_franco
glenn harris
Racial equity should be a central role of government.
Janelle S. Wong
The role of gov’t, educators, stakeholders is to support an inclusive America w theory, empirical evidence, and resources #Destination2043
Tia Oso
@glennharriscsi Agreed. We need policy that will correct and repair structural inequity.
Linda Sarsour
Every segment of the society, private and public sector has a role to play to center racial equity.
Deepa Iyer
@glennharriscsi How can government advance racial equity when it also enforces and criminalizes communities of color (as @lsarsour and @marisa_franco would attest)?
Linda Sarsour
We must create a taskforce to review policies and procedures of all govt entities, I guarantee you they don't work from a racial justice framework.
glenn harris
We need fundamental transformation of government.
Deepa Iyer
Is the civil rights framework we have in place enough, @glennharriscsi @lsarsour @thecsi. Because it's an antidote and bandage, but not transformative.
Tia Oso
It has to stop! We need our gov't to realize that criminalization of communities is killing us, separating our families and stopping us from succeeding in society.
glenn harris
We need to understand that truly effective gov has to center racial equity. We can't have a succesful democracy with out it.
Marisa Franco
Our approach has been to push these folks to not just be allies that say they try, but champions who match the courage of communities organizing to change the system.
Tia Oso
We need community based solutions that are rooted in restorative justice practices, instead of punitive sentencing.
glenn harris
The current civil rights framework is not enough. We need gov to adopt racial equity in policy, practice, and principle.
Linda Sarsour
I think we have the opportunity to define what it means in 2015 - its multiracial, it centers the most impacted, its radical and transformative. Thats my civil rights movement of now.
glenn harris
We need real ownership of gov by communities of color.
Tia Oso
Transformation is what is needed. We need to reimagine our world, one that works for all of us.
glenn harris
Also opportunity? Gov is the single largest employer of communities of color in living wage jobs.
Marisa Franco
@glennharriscsi This arena is one where I think sophisticated inside/outside game is needed.
glenn harris
@marisa_franco Truth. How do we step our game up?
Ctr4SocialInclusion
@glennharriscsi @marisa_franco spaces to align that inside/outside stratey for one!
Linda Sarsour
First and foremost we need to encourage radical thinkers & visionaries to run for public office. No more of the same old politicians. We need activists as leaders.
Marisa Franco
@glennharriscsi That, my friends, is (one of the) question(s).
glenn harris
@lsarsour Yes, and elected officials alone can't change the institution. We also need to operationalize our vision in all gov actions.
