lots and lots of talk about DefCore. In working sessions, we had people from a lot of OpenStack companies asking questions about interop and certifying.

We're finally over the question of "Where is the enterprise adoption?" or "Does OpenStack work at scale?" Phenomenal keynotes.

@eglute can you comment on the interoperability and the work that defcore has been doing

Interop was one of my biggest takeaways from the Summit. This is huge for Customers. Will overcome the Customer hesitation on adoption of #OpenStack

Completely agree @blueboxjesse... I really liked the user centric keynotes and the new "user stories" breakout track. Any keynote session that stuck out in particular for you?

@ShamailXD The PayPal keynote 100%. Raw #s on their deployment are hugely impressive.

That said, OpenStack is still hard to operate. Customers DIYing need huge teams. Vendors selling software distros aren't ideal. There was huge buzz around managed OpenStack in Vancouver.

Comcast were equally impressive. more than 600 apps in prod

DefCore has been in the works for over two years, and I joined as Co-Chair at the beginning of the year. The work that has gone in it is phenomenal, getting majority consensus on what the spec for OpenStack should be is hard!

@blueboxjesse There's definitely a lag with today's infrastructure engineers and the skills needed for OpenStack

Still lots of confusion on what OpenStack is. Alternative to Amazon or alternative to VMware

I loved seeing all of the sessions where service providers and very large potential use cases are now looking to leverage OpenStack in their move toward next generation telecommunications networks. It's a huge validation for us.

@sriramhere True Cloud Don! Congrats to that team on the Superuser award as well. They do a lot in the community.

@blueboxjesse you nailed it as day two operations is still challenging what can the community do

Was also really great to hear from huge customers like Walmart Labs validating on their use case during the holiday season, as well as Paypal saying they now run 100% on OpenStack and play to do the same at eBay.

@eglute Kudos to the DefCore team on the work that has been done so far! Onwards and Upwards to the 'Flags' planning cycle.

interop is something that we will keep talking about, and DefCore will continue solving for it.

@ShamailXD Flag cycle is right! we had too many flagged tests in the first round of DefCore certifications.

Another big signal from keynote is #OpenStack is not shy to adopting seemingly competing tech. Containers were shown lot of love, Google on keynote!

@vmtyler @blueboxjesse - Is the #OpenStack Training project not mature enough to be adopted by organizations. Pros-Cons?

@ShamailXD They even gave their free passes for Tokyo to the Women in OpenStack group - in less than a 2 hour turnaround!

@abhojwani no the problem is a lack of prerequisite skills (python, etc). Too many next-next-done wizard engineers in enterprise infra today

@vmtyler @abhojwani Pre-req skill along with courses focused o n how to operate versus how to consume.

@abhojwani The project definitely needs more contributors to be able to deliver fully on its intended goals. That said, it's a very excellent starting point. A majority of the content was donated by Aptira for initial consumption but there's more to do...

@ShamailXD If you need a course to learn how to consume it, then the project as a whole is a failure :-)

Better coordination across projects to deliver features and functionality that are critical to specific use cases - both horizontally and vertically.

Newer projects are welcome, but we need more stability, maturity and scale. Treat Ops as project

I would also love to see other projects which use third party plugins to follow suit of Neutron and decompose the plugins and extensions from the core services. This is good for both the community and the vendor ecosystem.

Better feedback loops. This will let requirements bubble up and reach audiences that can do something about them.

More focus on Day 2 Operations, vs adding newer projects.

Consistency in operational characteristics from project to project. Naming config parameters the same, driving consistency in logging formats, etc...

i think federation is something that needs to be properly addressed. Not only at identity level, but also at network, glance, etc level. It should be treated as its own cross-functional project.

@eglute Federation is just a first step, we need to be able to discern backend services, available SLAs, redundancy and lots more.

@seanmwinn agreed! Scale is a big issue as well.

We are still missing proven reference architectures that map 2 different use cases, such as large scale general purpose cloud vs. HPC clouds.
