What do you all think about art and commerce? How should artists monetize their art?

Ariana Gradow
Good question!

Ariana Gradow
Its a tricky subject right because artists just want to make and they dont want to sell.

Ariana Gradow
pinned this to the top

Ariana Gradow
@maxbrody is making an app for this!

Chloe Fine Arts
Art should be as valuable a commodity as a car or a house or a TV. Of course artists should be paid for what they do. What is more important?

Amanda van Voorhees
thats a big issue in the US- theres a lot of false piety when it comes to how people like to moralize that issue-- seriously conservative views of value coming from patrons and consumers

Ariana Gradow
@chloefinearts Do you think that people are beginning to value art less?

Prizm Space
I would suggest @patreon !

Ariana Gradow
@PrizmEyez Cool I haven't heard of them

Ariana Gradow
Question for the artists: how do you make money off your art?

Prizm Space
@patreon is a subscription based crowdfunding platform enabling people to support their favorite creators

Ariana Gradow
That's cool. @maxbrody isn't that like what you are working on too?

See Art Differently
Too often artists are asked to work for exposure only, to get their name out there and that's terrible!

Chloe Fine Arts
@arianagradow From a gallery, many artists consign their art. The gallery pays the rent. marketing, client acquisition costs and when the piece is sold, the artist and gallery split the money. Usually around 50/50.

Max Brody
I think this is an area that is ripe for technological breakthroughs. I'm launching a project in a few weeks that aims to solve this in a unique way

Chloe Fine Arts
@arianagradow The artist pays costs of supplies to create their art and often shipping expenses to the gallery.

Max Brody
The core problem is monetizing the digital consumption of artistic content that can be so easily consumed and copied for free.

@arianagradow I def want to sell bc I have to make a living like everyone else. I think this time in history is the best for artists to empower themselves with their art through technology and social media...like @CrowdChatApp

Max Brody
The app is called Penny, it's a social network where people give pennies instead of likes to content, and all $$ earned for a piece of content goes to the creator. For every penny you give away, more people see your stuff.

Ariana Gradow
cool good stuff!
