What do you all think about art and commerce? How should artists monetize their art?
Ariana Gradow
Its a tricky subject right because artists just want to make and they dont want to sell.
Ariana Gradow
pinned this to the top
Ariana Gradow
@maxbrody is making an app for this!
Chloe Fine Arts
Art should be as valuable a commodity as a car or a house or a TV. Of course artists should be paid for what they do. What is more important?
Amanda van Voorhees
thats a big issue in the US- theres a lot of false piety when it comes to how people like to moralize that issue-- seriously conservative views of value coming from patrons and consumers
Ariana Gradow
@chloefinearts Do you think that people are beginning to value art less?
Ariana Gradow
@PrizmEyez Cool I haven't heard of them
Ariana Gradow
Question for the artists: how do you make money off your art?
Prizm Space
@patreon is a subscription based crowdfunding platform enabling people to support their favorite creators
CrowdChat
CrowdFunding!
Ariana Gradow
That's cool. @maxbrody isn't that like what you are working on too?
See Art Differently
Too often artists are asked to work for exposure only, to get their name out there and that's terrible!
Chloe Fine Arts
@arianagradow From a gallery, many artists consign their art. The gallery pays the rent. marketing, client acquisition costs and when the piece is sold, the artist and gallery split the money. Usually around 50/50.
Max Brody
I think this is an area that is ripe for technological breakthroughs. I'm launching a project in a few weeks that aims to solve this in a unique way
Chloe Fine Arts
@arianagradow The artist pays costs of supplies to create their art and often shipping expenses to the gallery.
Dijon
@maxbrody making a living off my art is very important to me. Would love to hear more about your app
Max Brody
The core problem is monetizing the digital consumption of artistic content that can be so easily consumed and copied for free.
Dijon
@prizmeyez i use @patreon. It's great! Check out my page www.patreon.com/soul...
Dijon
@arianagradow I def want to sell bc I have to make a living like everyone else. I think this time in history is the best for artists to empower themselves with their art through technology and social media...like @CrowdChatApp
Max Brody
The app is called Penny, it's a social network where people give pennies instead of likes to content, and all $$ earned for a piece of content goes to the creator. For every penny you give away, more people see your stuff.
Ariana Gradow
cool good stuff!
Max Brody
It's based off the principles of (1) having to give in order to receive. And (2) that a little bit from a lot of people is better than a lot from a few people

What about performance art? Does something that exists only for as long as it's being done count? (Our answer is obviously yes) Check out Marina Abramovic https://www.youtube....
Marina Abramovic on Rhythm 0
IOP VIDEO THING- temp up
Dijon
For me this is all about the feelings within the person viewing the art. It's all about their experience
Chloe Fine Arts
I LOVE Marina Abramovic! So courageous and willing to expose her being.
Chloe Fine Arts
Performance art suggests that we can live our lives as an artistic expression.
Ariana Gradow
I do perfomance art (dance and circus) and people say I am not an artist. It makes me sad bc I feel like i am :) @ArtistisPresent
Ariana Gradow
But sometimes I am just a clown
See Art Differently
@chloefinearts We do too! Check out Angelica's write up for Rhythm 0 http://www.sartle.co...
See Art Differently
If we all thought of our everyday lives as a continuous performance piece would we live it differently?
Ariana Gradow

.@chloefinearts Any upcoming showings we should know about?
Amanda van Voorhees
this is so funny---- this is a great example of the way things are moving today--- we have so many little nodes flying around instead of one focused convo
Chloe Fine Arts
So true, Amanda! It could also be thought that we are evolving into beings that can have multiple levels of conversation at once. Given the "problems" (opportunities?) present in the world today, maybe that's what the planet is calling forth.
Chloe Fine Arts
I do though still enjoy a quiet conversation without the "Chatter"
Ariana Gradow
yes its making me confused.
Chloe Fine Arts
It's kind of the same thing Anna Walinsa's "Figure" was looking at.
Prizm Space
@sfmoma how do you think technology has influenced art?
Ariana Gradow
Good question. For one it can reach more people.
Ariana Gradow
In #SF though, tech has pushed out many artists>
Ariana Gradow
Artists can now share their art and evoke a movement through the internet
Chloe Fine Arts
Tech is great! It exposes so many people to art. The downside is gallery and museum traffic is down. There is nothing like standing in front of a great painting or statue.
Prizm Space
@chloefinearts totally agree! @sartle does too I bet ;)
Max Brody
Technology is power, it can be used for good or for evil. What matters is the intention
Kevin Vigil
its the best! the more tools the better. Artists are able to dabble with laser cutters, 3d printers, projection mapping, interactive sculpture with the use of rad computer programs!
Ariana Gradow
Kevin why do you think so many artists boycott the tech movement?
Kevin Vigil
@arianagradow i don't know if artists boycott the tech movement, i just think some are afraid to try new things. once an artist is acquainted with they're medium its only natural that they stick to it. I'm not one of those artist. i like to explore.
